Evening All,

I'm looking for a watch, and would like some advice....

My main watch is a steel Breitling B2. This is great in most circumstances, but it's a bit too clunky to really sit comfortably under a double-cuffed shirt, so I'm after something slimmer for when I've got to wear a suit.

- I'm not looking to spend a fortune - £200 or so maximum - but it doesn't have to be new. Also doesn't have to be Swiss. Any nice pieces from elsewhere - UK, Japan, Russia etc?

- It doesn't need to have any chrono functions or anything. Just time and date would more than suffice.

- It should be a mechanical movement.

- It should have a fairly large dial to match my fairly large wrists! The problem with the Breitling is depth, not width.

- It should have a simple, classical face (timeless rather than retro).

- It should be round, or possibly a tank. Definitely not square or oval!

- No copies please.

- Stainless steel body and leather strap. Brown or black, preferably.

To give you some ideas of the sort of thing which would provide inspiration (but are way out of budget) here's a few ideas...

And as a good example of exactly what I don't want.....

Hey Chris,

You're going to have to look hard for a decent mechanical watch <£200! I think Christoper Ward might have what you're looking for:

Werner's Flying Watches?

A lot of the watches they sell are rather, er, 'busy' in the cosmetics department, but they do some nice simple designs at wallet-friendly prices.

Those do look rather nice! I shall take a more detailed look when I get a minute later today.

In the meantime, just to reiterate, the watch doesn't necessarily have to be new.

I used to own the JLC pictured below. It dated from the forties, worked perfectly, apart from the hands having lost their luminescence, obviously, and cost me well under £300 on Ebay. The only reason I sold it was that it was just too small (34mm or thereabouts iirc), and looked like a lady's watch on my wrist. cry

If I could find something similar up around the 40mm diameter or so, it would be perfect.

The CW will be hard to beat I reckon, I do like the C8.

I've got one. Arguably insufficiently dressy for wearing with a suit.

The Christopher Ward that you're looking for, Kermit, is the C5 Malvern Automatic on black leather:

£210.

Out of the options so far I would second the Seiko Spirit and to be honest I can't think of anything else.

I've tried this one. It is very nice in a subtle way. Suitably weighty feel (but not heavy like a diver's watch) yet elegant.
