Worth waiting?
Discussion
Hello All!
Have decided to treat myself to a decent watch! Have had a look around and really like the Omega Seamaster. Iconic Watches are selling the quartz version for £850, which seems like a good price.
My question to the PH watch experts is do the high street retailers (Goldsmiths, Ernest Jones etc) ever have decent sales in January where they are like to beat this price (so it would make it worth waiting a few weeks)...I think they are both currently selling it at the rrp of £1160.
Also, what else should I be considering in my budget? I am not against buying preowned, however, as it will be the first decent watch I will have bought myself, I would prefer new!!
Cheers

Hi Harbuzi,
Where to start....
If your budget is £850 (but let's say you've got £1000 because I don't think anyone here ever bought a watch for exactly what they said they'd spend) then you've got a fair amount of choice. Apart from having a good stare in the window of your local Goldsmiths I'd consider:
- How often you'll wear it (work, weekends, evenings).
- What you'll do with it (do you need to get it wet, do you smash bricks for a living?)
- Have you or would you consider pre-owned?
As for your specific questions, while there's nothing wrong with Quartz, at your budget I'd be inclined to go for a mechanical watch that has had more craftsmanship and is just a bit more, well, interesting.
The high street jewellers won't have sales, however it is worth knowing that you should be able to negotiate down by up to 20% on RRP, so don't pay the marked up price. Such negotiations will more than likely be easier after Christmas.
Alternatively talk to Dominic_H. He can supply you with a UK watch with UK papers and he'll probably do you a better deal than you'd be able to do in your high street store. He comes recommended by many here.
Welcome to the forum - you're at the top of a steep slippery slope...

I agree with Stuart, for £1000 the options are plentiful. Would definatley speak to Dom H - he sorted me out with an Aqua Terra at a good price and it is sitting proudly on my wrist as I type this.
Goldsmiths and the like do have January sales, but the brands tend to be Oris, Longines, Boss, Gucci etc etc - it is very rare that any Omega's are included and if they are then they tend to be the less popular models.
Good luck in your search and look forward to seeing a picture or two in the 2010 wristshot thread

Thanks for the advice guys! Regarding some of the points it will be worn socially (not for work or gym). I'm not into swimming or diving, so water resistance is not a big factor for me. I have considered pre owned, and I suppose as with cars if you can get more for your money then that is a good thing, however, I know so little about preowned watches I wouldn't really no where to begin!
I appreciate the reasons why a mechanical movement is more desirable. I have had a look at Christopher Ward and they seem to do some nice ones, and are actually well within budget. Hmmm....I always take ages deciding, so think I need to go and annoy my local jewellery shop.

hey Harbuzi, quite funny..i bought a watch from ancient and modern jewellers in august last year, if i'm not mistaken they are the chaps (johnny marr?) behind iconic watches? All i can say is that they gave me great service and beat a price I found elsewhere. The fact that they have a high street store and great prices sold it for me - it means if there is ever a problem with the watch then i know they will still be around to sort it out for me.
As for your choice of watch, Omega's are great, reliable, look good etc and yeah quartz watches are fine, they keep better time than mechanical ones but I guess like Stuart says they lack the soul of mechanical ones. And again like stuart says it all depends on what situation you want the watch for...? That being said that particular omega is a great all round watch, durable, looks impressive and obviously keeps great time...
hope that helps?

Mate, you're buying a watch and you haven't consulted me or Lomas?!

Remember that staff in Ernest Jones get 30% discount so you can always ask for 30% off and offer 10% cash on the sly!

I have a nice Tag Link (WJ201C.BA0591) I've only worn twice, still in warranty if you're interested?!

Buy pre-owned nearly new from a reputable source and you'll get a better watch for the money.
I'd purchase a new as possible Omega Seamaster automatic given your comments about the quartz model.
This guy on ebay has been very reliable and let me collect in person from him which indicates he's above board.

His stock changes all the time so could be worth keeping an eye on.

Goldsmiths online seem to always be having a sale. Some nice Oris (auto) and Tag (quartz) watches, the Oris chrono on page 1 looks nice, and the bi-metal chrono on page 3 is half price and looks a bargain (if you don't mind bi-metal) http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/sale.asp?a=null&Pa...
Haha, are you stalking me Michael?
Well, I didn't consult you because I presumed you were a Tag man and wasn't sure if Omega was in your field of knowledge/expertise! Have got a seiko monster (orange face) on order so slowly building a little collection.
I am also shocked that you would think I would embark in such shady dealings.
Regarding your tag link, if you are charging anything like you do for your cars when you sell them on, then I think I am well priced out I'm afraid!
We will discuss it further when I see you guys Monday!
To the other posters, thank you for those links/suggestions. I am going to have a look at them now.
