Hi Guys,

I am going through the process of selling my late mothers jewelery as it is doing nothing sitting in a drawer and I would much rather put the money towards a nice watch that will then inherit the sentimental value and be something I can wear and use. Soppy I know but there you go.

I have one piece left to sell and I would like some information about it first and an idea of the value. It is a ladies Longines 9ct Gold watch.

The writing at the bottom which has been obscured a bit reads: 153 SWISS 397*
The * represents a character that I cannot make out.
The size of the watch is pretty much identical to the size of a 1p coin.

I larger version of the image can be seen here: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2526/4202917947_088...

I have done some basic searching on google but have not been able to find anything. Does anyone know anything about the watch and an approx value?

Regards,

Doug

Presence.

Isn't it the model name?

Longines Quartz that small...got any papers, box, history?

If not, I reckon you'd be lucky to see £50 from it. What were you hoping for?

No box, no papers, needs a new strap and crystal. I'm not hoping for a fortune!

Been offered £20 by a jewelers for gold value.

Don't scrap it. Find a local watchmaker to replace the crystal and strap (maybe look for a proper Longines strap on ebay?) and sell it on. Or, unless you really need the money, keep it as a memento.

That is a possible idea to be honest. Thats why I was asking about the value of the watch so see if it would make sense to restore it and sell it on or if it is not worth it.

If it was me I would restore it (I have a very good local watchmaker. Far cheaper than a jewellery chain.) and either keep it in the collection, or give it to the missus.

I have been told that the cost would be approx £80 by my Jewelers. £20 for the strap and £60 for the sapphire glass. Then maybe another £20 for a battery and a case polish including fitting all the bits.

That sounds fairly reasonable. I would expect to pay around £40 for a glass, a fiver for a battery at my guy. Straps seem to be around that price. Do the battery at least to stop the old one leaking in there.

Longines is a good make. It's a nice little piece but I'm afraid quartz qatches are much less sought after than mechanical watches.......and it's a ladies, women being less geeky than men, do not naturally collect watches (or train sets etc.)

There is a specialist watch guy in town. I will pop in to see him tomorrow and see what he can do price wise. WOuld be nice to have it restored and keep it in the collection.

Is anyone able to tell me any more about it?
