No idea if this interests anyone here, and also no idea if it equates to good value as the GBP is absolutely tanked against the SGD but was wandering about Orchard Road this morning with a bit of a hangover, having a look in a few of the old pre-owned watch shops and was rather surprised to see a white face SS Rolex Daytona in one of the cases.
Asking $SG20k. (there is usually some good haggling to be had there too, so perhaps closer to 16k)
Too rich for my blood but i know that these things can be like rocking horse droppings to find so if anyone is interested i can forward the shop details.
NB - Not affiliated to said place, just thought someone may be interested.

As i said, exchange rates are buggered for the poor old GBP.
18 months ago it was 3.1 so GBP6.4k before discounts are haggled.
Guess that (ironically) the UK is the bargain hunters paradise for the rest of the world currently
damn, that means that there is actually one good thing that Winky's policies have done for the UK, brought in foreign money

Goldsmiths in CW quoting a 3 month wait for a new Daytona. Sign of the times - nice to see wait lists are down.
Steel/steel?Interestingly, after having a bit of a chat with the manager, he said he doesn't think the Daytona is worth the current list price, never mind the premiums being asked!

I doubt you can get a daytona in the uk in less than 12 months but if you can get one in 3 good luck to you.
I recon a large % of the custom Goldsmiths CW have are from the towers above, said towers have lost a lot of staff and others not getting or receiving less bonus's or payrises so maby the list has moved on a lot quickerJ
I really can't fathom Rolex & prices? Why is the bi-metal black faced Daytona less desirable, and less money than the SS?
Why is the white faced SS more desirable than the SS black faced version? Or am I only being told this by the man who has a 'white face' for sale??? Ebay prices from UK dealers do support this though?
It's a bit like the 'Kings new clothes'!
I fancy a change - but my black faced, ceramic bezelled GMT II looks and feels so good!

This whole 'Daytona' thing is very amusing - there's an artificial demand, in a few markets, created by people who want one because they think they can't get one, giving it a 'must have' kudos amongst those for whom it is a status symbol to have something that is, theoretically, difficult to get.
Of course Rolex and many dealers like this. The retail price has been pushed up significantly over the last few years and for those dealers who can get them there is an easy margin to make.
My own AD says that he no longer runs a waiting list, he just puts them in the window when they arrive, encouraging people to regularly look in. Others are less scrupulous.
Can only be a matter of time before the bubble bursts? Or, am I underestimating the gullibility of the market?

Blade ade, you are incorrect i spoke to them last week. No 3 month waiting list.
I was buying watches for me and missus two weeks before Christmas, and I was advised a SS Daytona would be about a 3month wait if I wanted one. They said the same thing about a new Deep Sea, but then they offered one 5 days later that had arrived in the weekly delivery.Geneve said:

Whether the bubble bursts depends on Rolex. If they decided to make more Daytonas, there wouldn't be a bubble in the first place. If they were a 'normal' company that is exactly what they would do.Of course Rolex and many dealers like this. There might also be an element of cyclicality in this. I remember when I wanted an Explorer II ten or so years ago, there was a waiting list for those too. I ended up paying a small premium over the then list price for one from one of the traders in Bond St. Nowadays, and for the past quite a few years, every AD has had a choice of white and black faces in their windows, and you can buy them at a discount. Quite simply, Rolex upped the supply. Anyway. I live in hope that the same thing will happen to Daytonas!
