I get all sorts of spam mail trying to sell me stuff. Most of it is drugs / 'degrees' / russian wives / penis enlargers / fake watches / etc.

Today I got something from Expansys, who I've bought a mobile phone from in the past.

http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=190072&partne...

It's a Bluetooth Watch, apparently. Not as cool as the entire PDA-in-a-watch we had a thread on a while back... but apparently you put your phone in your pocket and when it calls, the watch buzzes and shows the caller ID.

From the basics, it appears that all it'll be able to do is show the numeric caller ID, which is useless as nobody remembers their friends' numbers, they expect the phone to show them the name / photo when they call smile Also, you can't talk into the watch, you have to then either fish out your phone or use a Bluetooth Headset, which automatically makes you look like a nutter talking to yourself.

So.... hmmmmm... not sure Patek have anything to be worried about just yet.

Anyone know of any geek-gadget watches that actually *do* have useful functionality? I once bought a watch that had a USB memory stick built into the strap - it was completely clandestine, all you had to do was take the watch off, the USB socket was part of the clasp, and then plug it into a computer to steal data / reboot into Linux / hack into the box. However that's redundant nowadays when you can get USB flash drives built into anything (I've got a innocuous-looking camera SD card that snaps in two and turns into a USB stick...)

So a thread for favourite gadget watches? wink

I've also got one of these about somewhere, well worn though, and the batteries lasted about 2-3 months

A wifi watch is potentially useful... unless it just tells you there's a connection but doesn't discriminate between open and secure.

Not a geek watch but I've never seen a drum machine watch before...

"FUNCTIONS: chronograph, alarm, calendar, metronome, BPM counter and built in DRUM MACHINE!!!.
( metronome, 6 rhythm patterns and swing on/off etc.)
Ideal for musicians, DJ's and collectors."

This isn't a geek watch either but I can imagine there were some geek moments making the crystal....

"The unique aspect of the watch is the large 3.6mm thick sapphire crystal that serves as the front plate of the watch in lieu of metal. The result is an ability to see the MB&F automatic movement that powers the double faced timepiece. Here now are full images of the watch showing the incredibly complex large sapphire crystal plate over the watch in its full glory. Just as expected you have a very clear view into much of the movement. I believe that the blue "vein" through the watch is the water-resisting sealant ring." (Yes, it's the gasket)

I recall dragging my mum round small London boutiques trying to find a small shop that had advertised an imported Casio 'DJ' watch from Japan. This was pre internet, a good 15 years ago.. Much was the disapoint to find this £150 gem was literally a Casio digital plastic strap non G-shock. The DJ function was limited to a variable speed 'chirp' - supposedly the BPM counter... As you can imagine it was a long train ride home empty handed.

I've got a G-Shock with a variable BPM counter, must have got it about 8/9 years ago smile

It's a bit of a gimic to be honest, I got the watch when I was on a school trip to Barcelona (I was about 11 at the time) so it's actually about 10 years ago now. The story behind it goes that I scratched one of my nicer watches (at the time) on a wall and I wanted a watch that was pretty much indestructible. In Barcelona airport this g-shock happened to be pretty cheap, I think I paid about £40 for it.

Here are some photographs borrowed from the internet, mine does have the massive Velcro strap with a little rope attachment too, no joke it's a massive piece of kit.

Mine is yellow but is identical to the red one in the photograph(only yellow in colour like the top photograph), the yellow peice on the bottom has a slightly different spec, mine says 200m resistance not 20bar, does not have "G-MIX" on the lug, does not have the auto-light feature and my light "G" button is not chromed, it is blue.

I haven't worn it for ages, when I am home I will dig it out and post some of my photographs.

I had a Seiko Frequency, calling it a drum machine is pushing it a bit. It had six rhythms you could speed up or slow down, or a BPM counter which was either a beep or led flash you could vary the time of. The strap was tat, I'm pretty sure I got all my money back on it though.
