Looking at one of these: Seiko SKX013

Cheapest I can see is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am... at £52 delivered.

BUT.... what do you suppose this means:

This watch is newly assembled the case still have plastic cover dial, hands ,bezel and crown are all original and new came from Japan in bulk then assembled by the proffesional watch makers

the crown and case back still have blue plastic sticker protection against scratches
Have they got a job load of parts and assembled themselves?! How odd....

Also it appears the have a "V" where the date should be - any ideas?

Look at the details - aftermarket, dial, hands and strap I think it said.

In other words, it's a fake, and they are saying it's a fake.
But why fake a £100 watch and sell for £50...?

ebay seller said:
Black dial with lumibrite hands and markers
Stainless steel case and screw case-back
Rubber strap

...........

This item is guaranteed to be 100% authentic and Brand New .
Looks the same as this to me (with the exception of day/date thingy):
http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-dive...

Can any experts confirm its a fake?! Should I run a mile?!

Because it makes you £50?

The problem is the movements are cheap and mass produced.
It'll be the same movement in a fake expensive watch.

The fake Rolex will make them £150, the fake Seiko will make £50. So fake both of them. Widen your market.

I'd not buy anything from Asia, unless I was happy with a fake.

You'd be able to tell if it was without a lupe, a case opener and a genuine watch next to it.

I've had this since 1980 and have been looking for an original bracelet for it. Anyone got any ideas as I don't want to risk a fake bracelet.

Is it a fake? Or just modified? If it's a modified original, it could go for >£100. I'm confused by the ad, tbh.

Couldn't tell until it was infront of me, and then it's too late.

And who says that the pics are not 'real' and the watch you get isn't?

Well, yes, TBH I wouldn't trust anything on Epray. I don't have an account for a very good reason. (Actually, I do, but it screamed SCAM when it asked for my credit card details when I wasn't buying anything so I've left it at that stage of the registration process.)

I'd say it's 'modified' or you could even say a restored watch with non original parts.

At the moment these Seiko divers a flavour of the month and to feed the demand there's a big market in aftermarket parts, some of which are dead accurate, some not so.
So if you want an old Seiko diver, but don't want a bit of age to it, then you go aftermarket, usually for the face, hands and bezel insert.

The 'fake' Rolex mentioned above will have no original parts, at least most of the Seiko's have an original movement and case.

Just editing to add that the 'V' on the date is quite normal and it usually alternates with the english, French etc other language.

The 'usual' issue with fakes is the lume & pearl.

Lume is usually rubbish, but people then get them re-lumed or just get a genuine dial. Seiko's are known for their amazing lume, my monster will glow bright if I walk to a dark corner of the office or cup my hand over it.

Then

Look at the pearl of this :

And compare it to this :

On this example you'll also see the '4' on the '45' on the bezel isn't quite right (none of the numbers are crisp), the white date wheels are also a give away.

Looking at the divers ..

http://quartzimodo.com/articles/how-to-spot-a-fake...

website said:
Top left: Fake SKX007 Arrow-tip second hand and white "Diver’s 200m" text signifies this is not the real thing. Authentic SKX007s have a lumed ball on the opposite end of the second hand.
There are then some pics of the good fakes.

Perhaps we need a lume thread.......

That’s a 7A28 from around 1983! Not that I'm a watch geek smile

I too regularly wear one and have dozens of different variations. And besides being a good looking chronograph, the tactile / clicky buttons are very good for track days !

Which strap type are you after ? There's quite a few varieties. You can often find original straps on ebay for £10-£30. Alternatively, just buy a dead 7A28 or 7A38 with strap, for maybe £20. Being stainless steel, they are very easy 'brush' back to almost new looking.

Yup, but the date discs are white on the orange dialed ones.

Just to resurrect this...

I just bought this tonight:

Aftermarket dial, hands, bezel insert and crystal.
Original case and caseback, polished/buffed to "like new", original crown, bezel and movement.

I love it.
Might have to get another and bead blast one of them. scratchchin
