My wife is treating me to a new watch and wants to buy something nice to replace the crappy Seiko I've been wearing all these years. We're off up to London next week for a short break and I was wondering which bit of London is "watch central".

Any recommendations for particular shops and emporia are welcome.

Budget is around the £1000 mark so no idea what I'll get for that.

Burlington Arcade and surrounding area, if you can't find something you like round there then there's something wrong with you hehe (but the grand might get stretched)

With £1000 I would avoid Burlington Arcade. Unfortunately, you will not see a lot of choice at this level in Picadilly and Bond street. Why not go to Westfield near Shepherds Bush. Most of the big chains in situ and remember.....7% off the window price is a decent haggling point to start.

This place is great: http://www.austinkaye.co.uk/Home/Default.aspx

Bought several watches from them myself. Prices are realistic, especialy for the smoke!

In the end I went to Jura Watches, close to Burlington Arcade.

Decided on what I thought was a very nice Maurice Lacroix Phase de Lune Round

Would have been nice to get an Automatic but I'll settle for the Quartz movement as it looks and feels just right.
