My wife has recently come into some money. Given the pathetic interest rates on offeer, she's wondering if it might be better to buy a couple of good watches (men's or women's)with a view to keeping for a few years. Is this a good idea? If so, are there any particular brands she should look for? I must admit I rather like Patek Philippe as they tend to be rather understated and elegant. Neither of us like chunky and over-elaborate bling.

Buying a quality watch will probably not make any money but will help preserve it while having some enjoyment from your investment.
I sold my Rolex GMT 2 bought second hand from a jeweller friend in 1998 back to him in 2008 for the same money, and he easily resold it for the same profit margin as before.

I bought a Rolex Submariner from the US a few years back for £3200 at the then exchange rate and sold it a year ago for £4200. I replaced it with a Breitling Montbrillant and sold that for the same as I paid.

Now I have a Panerai Rattrapante Ferrari Limited edition. I am hoping this will appreciate as I managed to buy it at a very significant discount from a jeweller friend. Not sure if I will sell this one though as it is a lovely looking watch.
