I've been toying with the idea of getting a nice watch for a while now. I've been browsing around differant web sites and it seems to always be the antique watches that catch my eye, large modern watches just down really do it for me.

I know very little about watches and how much I should pay for one.

Whilst browsing, this 1940s Gallet watch caught my eye.

Its up for £950 on the web site. What do you watch connoisseurs think about it? Would £950 be an excessive amount to pay for it?

I had not heard of the, which shows I know bugger all about watches, this was quiet suprising http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallet_%26_Co.

I think that looks very nice, and a quick troll on the internet would suggest not to expensive.

I've not heard of the brand before so it may well be one of the Swiss brands that disappeared during the various periods of consolidation of the industry.

What I would say, is take a look at places like here: http://www.chronomaster.co.uk/vintage_watches1.htm as you might find what you are after or at least get a view on comparative costs.

Superb, a nice example, obviously hand wound and not water resistant on the practical front but a great make and natty looks.
There's probably a few examples/information knocking around on the ATG vintage watch forum, price compare at somewhere like chrono24.com (bearing in mind condition etc affects price) and have a look at alternatives like Universal Geneve.
Very nice, and if original will/should hold value well.
