Looking to buy used Cartier as 18th birthday present, and see some advertised as simple "CARTIER", with matching text on face...bt others are "Must de Cartier".

What is the difference ??

Why the "Must de Cartier" ?

Thanks, Big Ant

A Cartier for an 18th is a lovely present and I'm sure she'll be absolutely thrilled.

Don't let a quartz movement put you off - I have bought several Cartier watches over the years as presents, they're quartz and running fine after many, many years. Most of the Cartier 'Tank' watches in steel are quartz (in fact I think there's only one female Tank that is not quartz).

There are also many types/qualities of quartz movement, Ebel and Cartier (for example) use the very best. These are not swatch movements inside.

I can't understand why anyone would spend £1k+ on a quartz watch, you're clearly paying for the brand and marketing guff. Would look at Longines or another similar mid level brand with an automatic movement.
On the other hand if she just wants a fashion brand something like a Armani watch at £200 would be more reasonable.

You could argue that buying a Rolex is buying the marketing - they stamp them out by the thousand. We all pay for branding in one way or another.

I have several watches over the £10k barrier (eek!) but would never be sniffy about a decent quartz watch, nor would I mind paying a few thousand for one that I particularly liked. The quartz movement in a Cartier is probably one of the best and I suspect would have a greater longevity than a cheap 'automatic' or mechanical movement.

My wife has quartz offerings from Jaeger-le-Coultre, Cartier and Chanel - beautiful watches and 100% reliable. She doesn't want a Breguet tourbillon on her wrist. Thank God.

I think non watch fanatics get very annoyed at having to set the time too.

Ladies will normally have a number of watched to match the outfit they are wearing and so unless they are automatic ( which makes the case much deeper and therefore less elegant) and coupled with a watch winder they will need to be set most times before wearing?

I think that a slim case is paramount so quartz is the easy way to keep the watch light and slim?

That's the line I will take in the future for the Mrs anyway hehe

I cannot see the problem if you are willing to buy into the brand. If you like the piece and enjoy the brand ethos then go for it.
