I'm also heading out later this year so am interested to hear too. I'd be looking at the (much) cheaper end of the market though - best place to buy g-shock etc.

I got back this morning. Didn't really go for shopping but did pop into Tourneau on Madison Avenue, who have quite a few nice pieces (Patek, IWC, JLC and so on). They have new and pre-owned watches, but they also have several shops in NY - so you can't see all pieces in one place. The website is a good place to browse. One thing they do, which is of no use to anyone now, is they have a kind of secret sale during Fashion Week (around the 16th September) where they bring a lot of stock together in one place (through Soiffer Haskin, not one of their own stores) and, apparently, do proper deals linky

I really couldn't say if prices are good - don't forget there is the 8%ish NY sales tax to apply to the prices and (I think) you're also supposed to pay import duty when you get back to Blighty. A very illegal thing you might do is get the watch shipped out of NY to somewhere like NJ, so sales tax isn't applied, then walk your watch back into the UK with no supporting paperwork. I wouldn't myself.

possibly it'll be an idea to buy the watch in new jersey and walk with it into blighty. new jersey isnt far from ny and also i have family in new jersey who might be able to help me. ill have a word with them. in particular im looking for a preowned watch store as i plan on getting either a breiling navitimer or a cartier santos. both of which dont hold their value.

There's still sales tax in NJ... I believe a way to avoid sales tax is to buy in one state and have your item shipped to another.
