Friend is selling a 6-7 year old Seamaster Pro Chrono 300m. Needs a service, but great nick and 100% kosher. Think he paid £2200 new. What's it worth? I'd like to give him £100 more than a sensible trade price.

No idea off the top of my head, but the sales corner at www.tz-uk.com or chrono24.com ought to give you a steal based on what others are selling for.

By "trade price" do you mean what he could sell it for privately, or what a dealer would give him for it? The websites above will tell you the former, but the latter isn't a realistic expectation without hawking it around a few dealers. I'm not sure that they'd quote a price that he'd find acceptable, as most "proper" used dealers will stick to stuff like Rolex.

My one and only service cost £300.

Out of curiosity, why does it need a service, mine didn't have a service for the first 30 years of use?

Tried the link above, interestingly enough, the clock which comes up on the screen is about 8 minutes slow.

Those clocks take their time from the system clock on your computer don't they?

Dealer price really, but I'll try those sites for an idea. Is there a Glass's guide for watches smile

I would say £1,200-£1,500 tops check Tz-uk.com and Ian Blowers.

Steve Burrage at Rytetime Leicester is a good watchmaker.

Cheers. Sounds about right. I was thinking a bag of sand ... maybe a tad less smile

(given that it needs a ~£200 service)

Cool. biggrin

Watch those SMP crowns/casetubes as they strip very easily if overtightened!

You can't go wrong with Steve Burrage he's a good movement servicer.

Dont know how old it is, but my Sea Dweller rated to 610 msw let in droplets of water in the swimming pool yikes

I had the watch for around 30 odd years, and when it went back for a service, they told me the "O" ring under the winder thingy had deteriorated.

If you do want to wear it in water, might be worth a service first, but it aint cheap, mine cost £300 which is more than I payed for it new.

And dont forget to insure it as well, you can add it to your house contents for a small fee.

You should be able to make the SMPs water resistant to 300metres for £50-£100 tops!

All gaskets are sourceable including replacement crowns around £25-£30.

Replacement Domed sapphire around £50 plus fitting.

I can pressure test watches down to 3,000metres if requested.

Bit late now, but.

He should never have paid 2.2k. They were only ever around 1.8k in this country (certainly were 6yrs ago).

I bought brand new in HK for 1.1k, when exchange rates didn't spoil things.

Services are around 200 quid from indies.

They are great watches.

You did very well to get a chronograph at that price. He got two or three hundred off it at the time, was £2.5k in the shop window!

I've got a standard titanium Seamaster Pro. The new one is coming with a 4 watch winder... oh dear.

The SMP chrono version certainly have a presence on ones wrist! biggrin

Biggest worry is dinging the scalloped edges as difficult to remove or blend satisfactorily.
