Rolex sea dweller ?
Discussion
Not a Sea Dweller owner myself (I have a late 90's GMT) but the belief seems to be that the classic SD will be more desirable longer term than the new Deep Sea. Think of it in 993 vs 996 terms - last of the classic design etc with the 2009 models being the very last*.
The Deep Sea is significantly bigger than the classic SD and has a far more modern bracelet so there are definitely benefits to the deep Sea. Guess it depends on whether you want the latest thing or longer term collectability.
I m not sure how well the Deep Sea is selling but I am sure someone will be along to tell us in a mo...

- I was desperately trying (but failed) to come up with some sort of beardy air-cooled vs kettle argument that we are all so fond of on the Porsche forum!!
I chose the Sea Dweller over the Deep Sea, the Deep Sea is too thick and chunky for me. Although objectively the Deep Sea is the better watch it didn't feel like I was getting a Nissan 370z (or 350z? - there isn't a Nissan 360) instead of a GTR.
I didn't buy it as an investment, I got it because I liked it. I don't think too many financial advisors would suggest you sink over £4k into a watch!

I bought my SD way before the DSSD was even thought of. It's as superb watch with an elegance of design that the DSSD can only dream of

and whilst it's somewhat academic because I'd never sell it, it's worth well more than I paid.
The DSSD has not been a sales success & whilst values may eventually rise, they sell for less than RRP second hand.

Seriously though, I'm not sure about Sea Dwellers, 'cos I don't collect those, but on a Submariner a V serial will have an engraved rehaut, an M serial wouldn't. I don't think that there are any other differences.
I'd have a Sea Dweller over a Deep Sea anytime. M or V!

£2,500 ish?

£2500-2750 would be a good estimate.

An asking price is exactly that though. I doubt it would sell at that price (more than a dealer, come on?!) and if it did you'd be a mug to pay it. £4,800... WTF??
Laings in Edinburgh have an SD in the window for £4,100. Looks really nice too!
However, these SD's will not be the investment people think they will. Thousands have been bought a 'safed' in the belief that they'll hugely increase in value.
(The 'new' SD will scuper that...)

Dunno about that. There is a 1665 SD on TZ at the moment. The seller is asking £9k. People over there seem to think it's a fair price. No reason to suppose the same won't happen to 16600's.Laings in Edinburgh have an SD in the window for £4,100. Looks really nice too!

As for the new SD scuppering the values of 16600's, I don't see that happening. The Deep Sea seems to me to be too much of a 'marmite' watch: some rave about it, others think it's close to being the ugliest thing ever to be screwed onto an Oyster bracelet. We should bookmark this thread and come back to it in 20 years time!

Rolex were making nothing like as many watches back then compared to now or the run of the 16600, hence the 1665 will always be much rarer. I agree with jshell, there are many people waiting to make money on it that won't ever happen. Riff Raff said:

Not sure on that.Logically given the DSSD is sold in far fewer numbers (if the 'net is to be believed) then it will be worth far more in the future; a la the original Milgauss.

It certainly will be interesting to see in the future what the values are like; I reckon even the early Tritium dials (on the 16610, 14060 & 16600) will always be worth a fair whack more.

And, I wasn't talking about the DSSD being the new SD, rumour is there's another one on it's way that'll bugger SD prices!
