As per the title really, I need to raise a bit of cash so I'm thinking of sticking my Omega SMP on the Bay to try to get the best price.

Main worry would be what payment to accept - if I do cash on collection it limits the area to London and surrounding area (which might be OK). Paypal fees are off-putting, plus the risk of a chargeback, what else is there? Bank transfer, cheque (allowing time to clear)?

Got to weigh it up really as the eBay final value fee will eat into any cash too I suppose.

Anyway, anyone done it recently? Any horror stories? Tips?

Thanks, CH

Why not chuck it on adverts section of PH, state your price no fees

The only trouble with the classified section on here is that you have to trawl through loads of pages of shops selling their stuff before you seem to get to any private sellers ads!

I've sold a fair bit yes. Cash on collection is fine for London because you have so many people in range, it only restricts the price if you live somewhere real out of the way or low population. But for a postable item you might as well take paypal and post out. If you use special delivery your insured plus you can prove delivery so no problem with chargebacks.

Ask for a deposit via paypal (Example: £50) and rest in cash on colection. Must collect within 3 days of deposit (non refundable) this should make the deal/transaction go through.

Edit to add.
Bankers draft is also an option, I always ask the buyer to make the pick up within banking hours, so my bank can check the cheque, likewise if they pay in £50 notes, I ask that we pay into my bank so they can check the notes.

Thanks all for the advice - I had been thinking along the lines of doing the transaction in a bank myself... hadn't thought of deposit via PayPal, rest cash on collection.

Think I will stick it on the classifieds here tomorrow night when I can get some photos with the box, etc though in the meantime.

Cheers all, CH

You can use the filter tool on the ads listings to filter out the trade ads yes

I wouldn't take a bankers draft in any circumstances. There are plenty of fakes in circulation and it may appear to clear at the bank only to crash a few days later. Paypal is perfectly safe although you do have to suffer their charges.

Dear Paypal,

I won the SMP that Dr Bob was auctioning on your site. I promptly paid via Paypal. He sent me an old potato via Royal Mail Special Delivery that I had to sign for before opening the package. Please return my money from Dr Bob's account.

Yours truthfully,

Mr E Bayscammer

OMG I tried to sell an Omega De Ville on ebay a few months ago - never again!

Despite limiting the criteria of bidders the scammers somehow got round it and managed to bid/buy it now, therefore meaning I had to stop the auction and complain to ebay and hope they refund my fees. This happened 6 times in a row.

Some were obvious but others were very good, pretending to be an architect from Holland (which I had to trace through the web for a contact number) for example - I telephoned the architects office which caused much confusion their end smile

One scammer managed to perfectly replicate an email from ebay confiming the auction win and then another from Paypal confirming the pay pal funds were in my account and I could go ahead and send them the watch.

I wont ever use ebay to sell anything of any value again, it's just not worth it. In addition, ebay is one of the worst examples of a user friendly site, nothing is logically positioned, it takes an age to list items and navigate around and is generally extremely infuriating to me at least.

I hate to break it to you, but you are far more likely to see fake £10's & £20's, (especially £20's), than you are any fake £50's, and I must have seen hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of forgerys over the years.

And a bankers draft I wouldn't touch with a bargepole.
Crikey, what's the best way of receiving payment for something of high value? Bank transfer?

Use the banks 'faster payments' process - money can be transferred instantly (almost) and they cant take it back (not as easily as paypal that is).
Or cash at a bank branch.
Forget bankers drafts and paypal.

You really shouldn't hate to break!
I too have seen many a counterfeit and given it back, I've been in business for 34 years.
I'm giving advice to someone asking for it, based on my experiences, everyone has their way of doing things, some are better, some are not!

There's nothing wrong with a genuine bankers draft! For me though, I like to make the transaction when the bank is open so they can give authenticity to it, whether this be in £10, £20 or £50 notes, sometimes I'm paid in all three you see! It's safer for all concerned and they know I've no cash on the premises after the transaction is complete, you see, you never know who's around the next corner wielding a barge pole.

Indeed so, but this is a seller not a buyer that we're advising

That's the point. If he were a buyer looking for an Omega SMP, I've just shown him how to get a free one. He is a seller and this is a warning.

Well it's in the classifieds now, but what a good idea of how to replace it! [JOKE]

Dr bob, spotted you add today sent you mail about it, it's just what I'm looking for. I'll happily do a bank transfer and wait for it to clear into your account (2 hours or less), I'm about 2 hours away.
