Mrs Tosser wants to buy me a watch am looking for a plain dress watch.
I was looking at a Tag Carrera Classic, model WV211BBA0787 today and it looks good, price was £1350.

I am no watch expert though I do have a small collection, so would appreciate any comments on this watch or alternatives.

Personally I wouldn't be buying new and would have a look at:

http://www.watches.co.uk/

£1500 will get you a few things.

Agreed. For that budget you can find a great used Omega. Tag is a bit naff IMHO.

I guess a lot depends what you want the watch for, if its showing off to your friends or wanting to be 'in' with watch snobs then you def need to look at buying a different make secondhand, however if your buying because you like the look of it, or just want a nice modern new watch, then Tag will be fine.
Just be sure to shop around, you can get very good discounts, and if anyone you know is popping to Singapore then get friendly with them as you can get good discounts out there and its not fake stuff.
With this in mind, look at more expensive watches, say 1,800 - 2,000 and you should be able to get it discounted to your budget.
just my opinion.

How about something a bit different:

Raymond Weil Freelancer. It really is a lovely watch and build quality is superb. £1395 RRP.

It wears nicely and fits well under a cuff if wearing a shirt. I have small wrists so its wears a bit bigger on me. It also has a display back which is very nice. Excuse the terrible photo's:

Cheers.

I noticed an advert for these in a motoring magazine and I liked the look of them, they do a nice one with yellow hands, but I see from the Raymond Weil web-site they are huge, about 2" in diameter I think... frown

What are you basing that sweeping statement of all Tag's being a bit naff on? The anti Tag sentiment on here is annoying, you could say SMP's are naff as they allude to being bond watches when they were always Rolex and they *could* be viewed rather like the BMW product inserts in the same bond films till they sensibly went back to AM in the later ones.

I have nothing against Omega, in fact I fancy a Planet Ocean soon, just sticking up for Tag. They are constantly innovating with the belt drive Monaco V4 , new movement (1187) etc. They have also been F1 timekeepers on and off fo years and still do a lot of sport timing. I admit I don't like the old 90's wavy bracelet ones but the Carrera's are a nice watch (and yes I have one) smile

I've actually got one of these, they wear very nicely - and surprisingly don't see many about.

For that sort of money, there is a fair bit of choice. I also have an Omega Railmaster (42mm) which came in around the top end of your budget.

Kinda depends what YOU want. There seems to be a lot of anti-TAG / Omega stuff on forums, but you're the person that has to wear it - get what YOU like.

Well I like Omega watches and am wearing a Seamaster Chronograph right now, I also like the look of the Tag Carrera, so maybe I just like naff watches ;-)

The Raymond Weil photographed does look good too though (maybe there is hope for me)

I may though save Mrs T some money and get her to order me a Sinn, there is one around £600 I really like.

For me, it is the Tag of Tag Heuer which is naff and a bit cynical. I love Heuer watches, love the logo, love the aesthetic of them. Just really don't see the reason to mess up all that heritage and hard earned cool ethos by tacking that Tag logo on top of it. For me, that's what made Tag a bit naff. That and the fact that most of their modern product which isn't aping the classic designs is a bit nasty. Give me a Silverstone, or a Siffert Autavia, a Montreal or any of their other great 60s/70s watches any day though.

That's just IMHO though. thumbup

Oh come on Podie, I've known you on Pistonheads for 10 years now, what does this mean? I've got a nice JLC it's worn very nicely, hardly a scratch after near on 20 years. On the other hand I've got a Fossil my wife gave me 15 years ago and it's not worn too well at all, indeed the case has worn badly so does that mean the JLC 'wears' well in comparison? Or do you mean it looks good when you're wearing it? Please don't go down the route of American, meaningless made-up words laugh
