Could you justify spending £30,000 on a watch?
Discussion
I couldn't but clearly people do.
This morning's post included the "Horologii" magazine from Jura. It wasn't difficult to spot that most cost far more than I'd ever dream of spending but there, on page 11, was the Tourbillograph Trackmaster Black at £30,000. I gasped.
When I recovered, I flicked a few more pages and found, on page 20, the Corum Admirals Cup Minute Regulater 45 at £215,000.
WTF

On my current income, no I couldn't... If, however, I earned as much as some of the city boys do, or one of those footballer chaps, then yes, easily, in a heartbeat.
I really love watches, in much the same way I love cars, but one has to be realistic about where to draw the line. For some, spending more than £5.99 on an Argos digital watch is crazy as the Argos digital will probably keep better time than a £30K automatic watch... But that misses the point it's a purchase made with the heart. My TVR is less economical, less reliable, and in the real world probably no faster than something more modern and sterile that could be bought for the same money, but I keep the TVR...
I have quite a few watches, values range from £50 to a few hundred. Come my 40th birthday and I will be spending several thousand on a watch I really want, it's an indulgence, but it will make me happy to own such a thing of beauty.

That's the Christmas shopping sorted then.

I would.
But I wouldn't spend it on that modern bejewelled crap. I'd certainly consider spending £30,000 on a rare vintage Rolex. In fact I thinking about one right now.
Not because I have 30K lying around and I'm a gazillionaire.
But because historically they've made outstanding investments (yes I know...no guarantee of that in the future) and I have more faith in buying something rare, desirable, historically interesting and of exquisite quality than I do in the bunch of cretinous amateurs running my pension and ISA.
If a painting, a piece of furniture or a car can be a rare and valuable investment, then why not a watch?

What are you going to get

I also love the Cintree Curvex with the Crazy Hours complication and Colour Dreams face, but if I am honest, it's going to be beyond my budget. It's also not really a watch for everyday use (no date, and you have to think about what time it says), and I'd want to wear it every day.
There are soooo many beautiful watches out there that my mind was changing on a weekly (or even daily) basis about what I would want for that special watch to celebrate me becoming an old duffer, but having seen a couple of FMs they stuck with me, they just felt special, I really can't explain why... I know lots of people berate them for being expensive for what they are, movement-wise, but they just make me tingle...

I went into Beaverbrooks the other week to have a look at, and get a price on a Monaco V4. She had to phone through to TAG as she had never seen or heard of one. She came back with a price of £66k and there's only one left. I thought it was going to cost aroung £4k.
If I could afford the V4 I'd have one!
