Considering spending £5000 on a watch to compliment my Vacheron Chronometre Royal and Oyster Datejust Perpetual for more or less daily use.

Criteria:

1. Bi metal is the best option, but will consider gold as long as it's not too bling. Unlikely to fit in budget though.
2. Nothing too noveau in design. As you can see from above, what I use everyday now is fairly classic.
3. Date function required. Don't need hundreds of time zones etc.
4. A classic, beautiful watch that doesn't draw too much attention.

I have zero hangups about used watches and I am more than happy to consider those as well.

Been a while since I investigated the market, so interested to hear some views.

Links/Pictures preferred please!

I'd suggest a panerai should be on the list.. these all fall around your price point. Simple and classy, I'd have thought they fitted the bill?

Hmm, its a bit difficult to recommend anything except what I would personally spend £5k on, so with your criteria in mind I would suggest either:

1. Dornblueth 99.3

or

2. JLC Reverso Grande GMT

or 3. Glashutte Original Sixties Panorama Date

Though I personally would forget about the date requirement an get a Dornblueth 99.2:

At that particular price point Grand Seiko is next on my list.

Jura now have them in stock and they really are beautifully made. I am just trying to make decide between Hi Beat and Spring Drive. I like the 10 beat mechanical purity of the former and the stunning accuracy and fascinating sweep secondhand of the latter. And either would be a worthy addition to any stealth collection.

You'll get a Bi-metal GMT IIC for that in the second hand market. I think it's the nicest looking of the new Rolex models by a long way. There's one on TZ at the moment. Or there was this morning. It looks a lot better on the wrist than it does in photos, and it isn't excessively blingy. Only downside is that the gold bracelet centre links do scuff up a bit as, obviously, the metal is quite soft, but the watch head itself seems to be quite sturdy. I like mine a lot.

Don't know if you need to be a TZ user to see this but here's a link anyway.

Thanks to you all for the responses thus far.

I took myself down to WoS today to have a nose around, it's been years since I did that.

Essentially, I found that my criteria have changed slightly (unsuprisingly!) in that I quite fancied the look of an IWC Portugese (without power reserve). It felt like a nice middle ground between the Rolex and the Vacheron I use the most right now.

Any views on that watch? The steel model and gold model are good value for what they are...

Beautiful watches, that yell across the room to the watch-fancier, but whisper to everyone else.
