I was given it about 15years ago and have just rediscovered it. It's not in great condition, is it worth anything? I don't know much about watches smile

Hi

I may be wrong but it looks like one of those fakes that were a gilt finish on a base metal, usually took a few months for the gilt/gold finish to wear through and a grey coloured metal (zinc alloy?) to show up..

I have quite a few of the cheap Omega/ Cartier/ Patek Phillipe watches that people bought from the 'lucky lucky' men that used to try to palm them off to the holiday makers (abroad)

As i said, i could be wrong but i don't think Cartier would produce such a low quality looking case, sorryfrown

Cheers, John...

It would make more sense why I was given it for free! It is a nasty looking watch anyway!
The finish did last a decent amount of time but I agree that a genuine Cartier would look better than this! smile

I agree with John.
I did think that the first time I looked at the thread, but wasn't entirely sure!

My dad had a Rolex in the same case.

It was a gift from a friend who had visited Egypt circa 1987.

LOL! I had the same reaction! I don't think it's genuine somehow...

That movement is a real beauty. Is the case actually rusting??

It is corroding but not rusting. It certainly is a stunning piece of craftmanship...

It could have been a good find, I hope you don't feel too deflated, I think you have taken it well. biggrin

If I rub my finger over the watch image, my finger actually goes green. wink
I wasn't expecting too much to be honest, one of my Mum's many boyfriends gave it to me when I was a kid!

Heh, I know what you mean! smile

It's a 2000 year old astronomical clock of some sort, it was found on a shipwreck 100 or so years ago. It is supposed to be 1500 years ahead of its time.

Quite an interesting read for fans of small things stuffed full of cogs and springs.

That is an interesting read. Maybe leaving my 'Cartier' in saltwater overnight will make it worth something!

Woah there!

What did you get in return? Was this a special Uncle.

On a serious note, I quite like the coroded look, not to wear but in a more arty kind of way. I know that I am an odd ball though.

Not quite! It would take more than a knackered fake watch for that wink

I sort of see what you mean. Sort of. smile

Continuing the off-topic spiral, there's a very good book called "Decoding the Heavens:Solving the Mystery of the World's First Computer" written by a mate of a mate.
