New style Seiko 5
Discussion
I've seen a few new style MX5s Seiko 5s on Ebay now for £85'ish. Much like it's automotive counterpart it's become bigger, heavier and more expensive. It still looks good, but it's lost the plain simplicity of the original I think. However it will satisfy the thick limbed who found the original too small.
This guy has described it in far more detail:

No ta.
Like the simplicity of my old style 5 - the new one has that look of a cheap watch trying to look flash, rather than the old one, which looks simple and understated.
Saying that though, I do have twig wrists, so I may be biased - I imagine an old 5 looks tiny on someone with big wrists.

The thing is "we" all bought the 5s that HongKongIvan was selling, but there are loads of different versions which I never understood. I just thought it was the one model in different colours. Is "Seiko 5" the movement rather than the watch?
I agree the new one shown above looks a little over done, expecially with the "Sport" logo on it. It loses the simple military style of the original.

Sorry! Couldn't resist!

They do vary a lot. I have a Seiko 5 Sport that is a lot chunkier and aka the mini-monster or monster-lite. See here how many different variations there are:

Are they hard to get a hold of now ? They are sat in my sock drawer and I am just thinking why not keep them... ho hum. If desperate let me know

One of them was "display back" IIRC.
I don't think it is. There's plenty of 5s without a display back. Wiki says:"Seiko's mechanical watches are highly prized by collectors—from the Seiko "5" series (the 5 reflects the five essential features of the watch, namely shock resistant, water resistant, automatic, and day and date display)"
