I've come for some help from people with more knowledge than myself, as the title says i am looking to buy myself a watch for my 21st. The only specific criteria is budget of around £2500 with a maximum of £3k and ideally something new. I obviously want something that is going to feel special but NOT "bling". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Bit different to the usual Omega and Tag recommendations, I tried this one on last week (just for kicks, it's not in my price range right now) and was quite taken with it http://www.time2.co.uk/shop/bell-ross-vintage-offi...

Pic doesn't do it any favours whatsoever, the silver face was quite something -

My 21st is next year and I'm hoping I'll be in the lucky enough situation to buy either a second hand Rolex Sub, or an Omega Speedy like the one pictured above.

Do you not have any more of an idea of what you want?

Black face/white face? Bracelet? Strap? Auto? Quartz? Chrono? Diver? Etc., Etc.

Has to be a Brietling - forgive spelling.

Or loninguers - forgive spelling

Both lovely watches nice weight and really classy. Plus for willy waving these need to be serviced once a year at c£350 and it takes 3 months - you send it away. We tool the piss out of our mate for this so he resolved it by getting two problem solved.

Note my other mate has no shame with watches he buys £5 brand new plastic casio. Never gets stolen battery lasts years so does the strap. They go much deeper under water than the splash proof gives it credit for and when it's finally dead go buy the replacement model again for buttons. Job done.

Longines maybe.

But, Breitling? The guy said he didn't want bling.

Breitling are bling, the OP doesn't want to 'willy wave'.

He said no bling.

It is also my 21st coming up and I was thinking of a watch from 1990 as already mentioned, probably a Rolex date/day date because I already have an Omega beater.

It really depends what sort of watch you want: dress, sports, diving etc. Watches I would be looking at if I were you and I wanted something for every day are: IWC pilots, Some of the Sinn range and Omega Speedmaster and Seamaster as already mentioned.

Personally, I would be looking on the second market for something really special, your budget will just about see you into these:

Blancpain Aqualung - one of the most beautifully constructed watches I have come across

Glashutte sport evo

IWC pilots chrono

It it were my money, I would go for the Aqualung, it is a limited model and has a current rrp of 7K and it's sublime. It has an in house movement too which is nice but I cannot see a watch that would offer better value for money than one of those.

How's about this, http://www.watches.co.uk/watch/9633s/jaeger-lecoul...

Are there any brands you have aspired too? As might be worth getting something from them if so.
I'm going to upset some people here, but imo an omega is a very nice watch and I have a few myself, but to me their not aspiration watches as there is quite a few around. All I mean by this is that if i were buying a watch for a very special reason then I would go elsewhere than the usual panarai, omega, breitling,Rolex, tag brands.

Take a look at some iwc's, zenith, glashutte, jlc, a lange and sohne (might struggle with the last for price range) and see if anything takes your fancy.

I'd be looking for something a bit different. I wouldn't be looking at anything you would find in the usual high street jewellers.

Depends what type of watches you like?

I bought one for my 30th last year and have worn it every day since. Looks smart with a suit but also fine with jeans.

I was a bit nervous about it at 1st as the most I'd spent up to buying it was £115 on a monster. It's pretty subtle though and only 3 people have actually said anything about it.

Some great suggestions here thanks guys. I am definitely heading towards the omega speedmaster as i think it is stunning and reasonably understated.
