I quite like the look of the BRM V12-44 but haven't heard much about BRM before.

Are they a decent brand and which level are they pitched at? Tag, Rolex, etc.

They're certainly pricey for what they are. They are relatively cheap ETA movements in nice cases (if that's your thing, they're not my bag I'm afraid) at a premium price.
It depends what you're looking for in a watch really.
If it's for the look then yeah there isn't much else like it. If you're more interested in Horology then there are much better choices IMO.

I hope that doesn't come across as condescending!

It might be worth looking for one second hand - They do depreciate quite a bit from new! Although if you plan to keep it, then perhaps depreciation isn't important ...
