I bought myself what I thought was a decent watch back in 1998, a St Moritz Titan, with titantium strap, which is still going fine, keeps fantastic time etc.

It initially came with a domed crystal which soon cracked and was replaced under warranty with a flat one.

This is now a bit scratched and should really be replaced.

I bought the watch while on holiday in Vancouver (where they are made / assembled - now sold under the name Momentum I believe), and I am wondering if

a] it should be serviced (what does that typically entail?)

b] where should this happen? There is a St. Moritz / Momentum agent in the UK - Hertfordshire Horologists, Tring. Are these guys any good? The factory charges c.$55 for a service, plus extra for a replacement crystal of course. Happy to send the watch back to Vancouver as all my dealings with them (I bought a replacement strap last year) have been great.

Thoughts?

cheers, James

You should try and have a sapphire glass fitted as they're not that expensive these days.

Cheers for a reply...

Umm, new to all this watch business (just bought one I liked the look of / could afford) - why sapphire and how would I be able to tell one was fitted? You mentioning sapphire rings bells, wonder if it had / has one already?

Regarding servicing, I've always been told it's better to treat it like an engine, and get it service regularly rather than wait until it breaks, then fix it.

Thank you for the info on sapphire

And I will think a bit harder about having the thing serviced.

No info on the UK company mentioned?

Sorry, I like this watch, and don't really need another - although I appreciate that that may be heresy on this forum!

Sorry reply added to wrong post.

You should definitely consider having a sapphire fitted you'll obvs need to know glass diameter and thickness and whether the glass has to be heavily bevelled.

Do you have the caseback details for the Titan?

Oh well, couldn't tell! biggrin

What sort of details? There's no number back there, just some general guff about the watch, namely - "St Moritz Titan chronograph water resistant 3 ATM all titanium"

Diameter of crystal would appear to be 30mm

Will see if I can take a picture....
