I have a Breitling A19350 Montbrillant Olympus. I think it's retail price is about £5K but I now find my wrist is permanently adorned with my Rolex Sub Date, so I want to shift it and release some cash.

I have been offered £2,100 by a dealer. That is within a few hundred of what I would have ideally liked to have sold it for. Is it worth going through the hassle of Ebay/Private sale or should I just take their offer?

I haven't sold a premium watch second hand before, so unsure as to what to expect regarding scams/hassle/deliveries etc. etc.

I see your problem. If I were you, I would try it on somewhere like TZ (much less likely to be messed around, but that's changing) for a week or so then go to a dealer. You might find someone that is looking for one of those.

Thanks Chris,

Dealer might be a good option, as I could be tempted into having something else and maybe they would give me a little more in that case.

I will have a look at TZ too.

DANG! Doesn't seem to allow new registrations on TZ at the moment.

For the sake of a couple of hundred quid on that sort of amount I'd just sell it to the dealer. You may not even get what you ask for it privately and end up with exactly the same deal.

My opinion anyway!

For the sake of 10% I'd sell to the dealer - you'll get paid straight away with no hassles. On ebay you'll have a world of hassle (and fees). TZ is great, but you'll need 50 posts to sell.

I remember when I sold a car on ebay it was 10% final value fee - £800 car meant £80 fee. Don't know what the fee would be on £2.4k but even if it's only £100, it's reducing the difference between trade and ebay - and so making trade seem even more appealing.

Also, with TZ you will need to get to 50 posts. If you try loads of +1 / inane comments to get there then you will get binned.

It is not a quick solution. Join and post as you would here and then in a few months you are up and ready to go, and even then you will need to gain trust in teh Heros and Villans section etc to make a decent sale.

I'd go with the dealer TBH. Or a quick punt on eBay with Cash on Delivery if the twunts will actually let you do that any more rather than force you to accept PayPal and then leave you with no human to talk to. frown

I think the message is clear, avoid eBay!!! I definitely would.

As the others have said, joining TZ only to sell a watch is very bad form. If the itch is there and the dealer offer is not an insult then i would go with the dealer.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

Think I will probably just take it to the dealers, but maybe pop an Ad in PH in the mean time until I can get to London to sort it.

Update: Sent it to the dealers - final bid came back a couple of hundred less as they said they would need to put on a new strap.

Couldn't be bothered with the hassle so took the bid - cash Chaps into my account a few hours later. Can't say fairer than that.

Maybe a few hundred less than I hoped, but a very easy transaction.

Sounds sneaky, did the watch differ from your description and ask them for the old strap back?

I did think that as I said on my description it had buckle marks and the restraining loop had come off, so I assumed they would have factored it in - but hey ho.

I noticed they are now retailing at £3,200 - so they have a £1,300 margin to play with - I guess a strap at £250 and a polish will still leave them a 50% markup.
