rotary aquaspeed.... or something else for £300.00
Discussion
Hi, I was perusing my local jeweller and saw this for 300 quid: rotary aquaspeed and frankly fell in love.
Now just before I go out and spend the pennies, it is worth noting this will be the most I have spent on a watch, ever, I currently have two fossil watches and a stainless steel G-shock (which I adore!)
Just wanted to know if there is anything I should know about the rotary brand as to be perfectly honest I am clueless when it comes to watch brands in the past I have gone for fossil as I like their unique designs and the G-shock because it is indestructible (believe me I've tried!).
Or.... is there any other watch you could suggest for that sort of price range, I particularly like the big hefty sports type watches.... over to you guys

I, and many others, don't rate them because most of their watches these days look strikingly similar to other marques (for example their navitimer copy, aka chavitimer) and their quality isn't that great. For £300 I'd be looking at Christopher Ward watches. Or maybe a nice automatic Seiko for a bit less.
I have two Rotary Editions watches. Quality is fantastic imho. As for allegations of copying styles - show me a (mainstream) maker that doesn't.
If you like it: get it. You're getting it because it pleases you, not to please others and not as an investment.
Rotary has more history than you think - certainly more than CWard. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_Watches

It's not about 'taking inspiration' or 'style cues' from other, more expensive, brands it's the sheer audacity they have in blatant rip offs.al1991 said:

I had a Rotary skeleton auto (long service award). I sold it. Quality was certainly much worse than Seiko. If you like it: get it. You're getting it because it pleases you, not to please others and not as an investment.

Wouldn't have another; history and heritage mean nothing if today's product isn't up to snuff.

I've never 'got' CW watches. I can't understand where the premium comes from.
That diver for example, with a leather strap ? The subtle tweaks to a design classic are a bit off for me. The hour and second hands, the rounded crown guards and the date at daft o clock don't do it for me.
OP, buy a Seiko Monster and take the missus out for a feed with the change.

I went to see the Aquaspeed again in the window and just to confirm i really, really do like it. Are they really not worth the £300?
Aside from the seemingly obvious borrowing of some design features.... is there inherintly anything "wrong" with them?
I will go in and ask to try the beast on and to man handle the thing, what should I look for in terms of quality, craftsmanship etc etc.
Really, I do not want to fork out 300 notes on something that will a). explode on my arm or b). have me ridiculed into never wearing it again

£300 for a quartz Rotary sounds expensive to me.
