Hi people, thought I'd introduce myself on this particular forum.
I'm James, 18 from Meppershall and am currently in the process of learning to drive (practical is booked).

Looking through the earlier posts, it's great to see you organised a meet at the White Horse and that's something I'd very much like to be apart of in the future as well as gaining valuable connections & meeting other enthusiasts near me.

Hope you all had a fantastic Christmas so far smile

wavey I was a resident of Buxton Close in Meppershall for a number of years, Mrs HH's best friend still lives there, so we're often in the village...

Hey mate, no idea as of yet. Have a budget of £2,000 for the car, understand insurance is a major factor in that though but would probably pay monthly or parents pay for the whole lot and I'll pay them back monthly as it works out cheaper. Any suggestions by all means please list them, I'd already created a forum thread on the 'general gassing' forum about a first car and received a lot of response from that which was great

Fortunately the SG17 postcode isn't too bad for insurance. Got any quotes yet?

A tip may be to avoid the usual Corsa, Fiesta etc as the claim stats for young drivers are obviously higher than the more obscure stuff.

For example; a Rover 620ti was cheaper to insure for me than a 1.4 ZR!!!

We may also be looking to sell my other half's Rover 25 1.4 at some point if this would help you.

Ps pop up and say "hi" at some point, I live up by the church.

A local meet wouldn't be a bad idea actually, at the moment I drive around in an absolute shed, 24 year old Micra. As has already been said avoid Corsa, Fiesta etc. I tell all my mates this but no they decided to go down that route, and I think they're all paying around 3 times more than me on their premiums. A mate has a 1.9 turbo Peugeot 306 and that's surprisingly cheap on insurance, not a bad mile muncher either if you're looking at going on any long journeys. Come spring I will be getting my old Landy on the road so if anyone fancies popping to the pub I'll be well up for that smile

James, can recommend http://www.ikubeinsurance.com. Have insured both my kids cars on this.
It restricts driving from 11pm to 6am ( Which are the high risk times for young drivers) but both were insured on provisional licence until they passed, then the premium didnt go up.
Both have 2002 VW Lupo's which we pay around £1200 each for TPFT.....everywhere else wanted £2-3K

Welcome James.

I originally hail from Shefford, I try to get back to Beds as often as I can, but it's quite tricky due to work commitments...

Another good place for meeting up is Chris' get-together down in N London/Herts... Get in touch with Chris71 and i'm sure he'll fill you in with some more details

Thanks for that insurance link, will definitely keep that in mind but it's the black box that really puts me off, I'm a heavy investor in technology but I'm not in agreement with the boxes, almost as if I'm neutering my car...

Again, thanks for the link to the contact and a potential meeting point. It's great to have some genuine forum members in the local area

It would be neutering the driver not the car, my son parks he's up and takes out mine
