Gastropub St Akbans/Hemel/Kings Langley area?
Discussion
Looking for ideas for a decent pub with good food to meet my son and his wife for a nice lunch tomorrow midway between Hitchin and Maidenhead. Anyone got any good idea? I used to work in Hemel years ago and would drive out to some nice places for lunch but I've completely forgotten where they were and will have changed since then anyway. Thoughts?

Here you go Rich, the Cricketers in Sarrat, we have been many times, on our own and on several car club runs out:

If the food is important - http://www.bricklayersarms.com in Flaunden.
Having said that, the last establishment I recommended gave a fellow PH a cr@p experience!

I know the one, food is good but feels more like a restaurant with a bar rather than gastropub.Elderly said:

an he recommend a good accountant?
Ha Ha!! Actually I don't act for him and don't want to - it can make life complicated!!
Same sort of thoughts of going into business with a friend - always ends up with grief.
However, I can recommend a good accountant if your looking??

The Black Lion is a good bet too - it is across the road from the Blue Anchor. I had some amazing pork belly last time I went.
I went to the Blue Anchor two years ago (so it might have changed drastically) and thought the food was good at lunch but quite expensive for what we got.
The waffle house is also right next door. Although they don't have a license for booze and it is very popular with young families.

Yes, I believe the landlord has changed in the last year. We had a really good lunch, sausages, steak pies, burgers etc. It was flooding in the road outside so it was fairly quiet but enjoyable all the same. In case anyone needs to know, there was a fire at the Alford Arms (Frithsden nr Hemel Hempstead) over the weekend - see their website for updates.
A great shame - I have been there a few times and the food is excellent (although we went once on Sunday and the traditional Sunday lunch was unexceptional) Staff friendly and efficient. I hope they are up and running again soon.
