Hi all

I have a 2018 1 series bmw, and i would like to keep for quite a few years, and the mileage is just over 5000

I have been looking into rust protection services

I would like a OE/clear finish and dry non oil finish if it is possible.

For it to cover inside the cavity's and under the car.

I am near Cambridge.

I have used rustbuster service in the past, but would like to try somewhere else, as was not happy with there work on my last car.

anywhere you would recommend please?

thanks
ian

The people who did the Merc W124 in a recent news article on here look pretty good....

CSK Automotive in Buntingford if you want a proper job done, however they use Dinitrol on the underbody and up into the arches which is a dry matter black finish, then waxoyl in the cavities. All exhaust components etc masked off, very tidy job.

I've had two Jap imports done by them and couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Worth a call to see if they can use a clear alternative.

I know this is an annoying PH thing, not answering the question, but I'm going to do it anyway.

IMO there is very little point in doing it because electrical / mechanical failures / foibles are likely to kill the car before rust.

Up until recently I had a 2003 5 Series which had no rust on it at all, even on the grubby bits underneath. I have no reason to think that would change inside the next 10 years at least.

It will have long since become uneconomical to repair.

Unless the model you reference has a reputation for rust don't waste your money. If it does have a reputation buy something else because short of not driving it in the winter or even wet nothing you can do will make much difference.

On the flip side to that, I have a 20 year old completely rust free toyota which i had properly undersealed a couple of weeks after purchase.

On late 90s and early 2000s Jap cars, it's categorically the rust that usually kills them, not electrical or mechanical issues.

For the sake of £500 I would get it undersealed anyway if you plan on keeping it long term.

thank you for the reply's so far

my car is the m140i, and bmw have gone away from the 3L turbo rwd 1 series, so i think it would be worth hanging onto.

What sort of price range is a proper undersealing? If it's a few hundred I'm tempted to get mine done but if it's a grand I won't.

£450-600ish

Obviously depending on the state of the car when you bring it in, but my DC5 was around £500 i think, and my bB about the same...neither needed any rust treating so were steam cleaned and dinitrol coated, thats the underside, arches, and then waxoyl in the cavities.

Worth doing IMO if you have a keeper and drive in winter.
