Thanks for your email, i might give you a call sometime
But i just wanted a weekend sort of car that will do maybe one trackday and one ring trip a year and was drawn to both of these
Is the Porsche significantly more expensive to run/service than the M3?
Im swinging towards the Porsche at the moment because i think that will be the more rewarding car

Well their both quite different cars. What they do have in common is that they are absolutely every day cars that can be used all the time. I ran a 2006 C2S from almost new to 2 years old and it went back with 18K on the clock. It didn't cost me a penny. It's the only car I ever regret selling.
I had a M3 DCT Convertible last year. It looked nice and girls liked it, but it was as floppy as wet trout and put me off the idea of a sporting convertible.
I have just picked up another M3, this time a manual coupe. The V8 is a cracking engine and the whole car is really practical. It's got oudles of grunt.
911's can feel a dissapointment at first. They not a car you get in and think, wow this is fast. But to dismiss it you'd be missing the point. A 911's handling is a most rewarding driving experience. It takes time to master but the fun you get in payback is immense. The shear traction out of corners really is incredible. It's why so many Porsche people dismiss the 4WD 911's. You just don't get much benefit.
For a weekend special though, I'd have a look at a GT3. The great thing about a 997 C2S or M3 is their everyday brilliance. A GT3 is significantly more focused, not very good every day, but great as a weekend car.
I still think, the 997 C2S is probably the best car Ive ever had. I just can't have two 997's.

Just make sure it's got a full service. The first 1200 mile one is vital. I would also want a BMW warranty as they're extendable and very good.
As for options, I did like the DCT transmission, but the manual isn't bad. It's obviously quite robust in it's action but that's typically of all big manuals.
I had EDC on my last one and if I'm honest it hardly made any difference, whereas the difference Porsche's PASM makes is very noticable.
The iPOD interface is rubbish. I'd just use the AUX in. I think the latest ones have a new iDrive which may be better.
Heated seats are a real boon too, especially in this weather.
My current one has the 18" rims which don't look very good but really suit the chassis, so it's either pose or poise.
I think at 3 years old they're a bit of a bargain. If your looking at spending big money £50K plus, then the 911 would be a better bet. However a 3 year old £30K M3 vs a 6 year old £30K 997, the BMW would be almost sensible!
