Can anyone recommend somewhere lovely to eat in or around Letchworth??
We're going up at the weekend to have a scout round with a view to moving there from London.
The missus is not sold on leaving the big smoke just yet where as i'm desperate to get out.
Would help to take her somewhere great to eat and convince her.

+1 for Redcoats, nice food , as it should be as it sits in the higher end of the pricing. Well worth it though. Can't think of much nearer to Letchworth though that would stand out.

George IV ?

Really!?! Standard pub grub really - not somewhere I'd head to if looking to impress.

OP - Have you read the sticky at the top of the Herts, Beds and Bucks forum? All the usual suspects in terms of good food are listed in there.

Try the Fox at Willian: www.foxatwillian.co.uk

You can walk there from the centre of Letchworth, so its a lot closer than Redcoats. Sadly, there's not a great deal of choice for a good, memorable meal in Letchworth itself...

"Letchworth" and "fine dining" not normally considered together. They have a pizza hut. biggrin

It was a quaker town and when I was a teenager hanging out there, there was one pub. Just the one. Oh and a tired hotel.

I would love to recommend somewhere to eat there but just cannot. If we ever eat out in that area, we go to the Dragon King for a stuff your face, all you can eat buffet. Which is fine for what is says it is.

Yeah i did kinda think that when I had a quick scout round.

Still, i'm liking the look of The fox at Willian, cheers Spindoctor.

We live in Islington, north London at the moment and we walked along Upper St last night (if anyone knows it?)
and the choice of great restaurants and some great pubs is mind boggling.

Spoilt for choice really.
Never mind, the thought of a nice big garden, 3 maybe 4 bedrooms, garage and drive for less than the price of our smallish flat is well worth it!

Have you seen Stepford Wives?

Only kidding, I grew up there and turned out ok. I am still around North Herts as our families are from Letchworth/Stotfold. There are pubs on the outskirts (I went to one that used to be called the Wilbury the otehr weekend, which was fine) but none of them stand out, I haven't been to the Fox for about 20 years so no idea how it is now. Got some excellent memories of that pub though.

I can recommend Hertford as that has much more in terms of bars and restaurants although it is more expensive than Letchworth. Also has 2 separate lines into London.

Thanks, we will look at Hertford, hear it's nice.
My sister has justed moved to Letchworth and loves it but she was in Buntingford before where nothing EVER happens,
so compared to Buntingford, for her, Letchworth probably feels like New York City!

Having spent my whole life in London (37 years!), Hertfordshire in general has great appeal.
My MX5 is tucked up in my parents garage, cause no chance of having a second car here in London (£400 a year just for a residents parking permit!!!???)
So craving more space and my own garage for tinkering etc etc......

We went to the Wilbury the other night - it's now called Gardeners Arms and is part of the Crown Carveries group.

To be honest - its a cheap carvery place, food is ok though. I'm a bit of a snob though and I just couldn't believe the people in there all trying to fit as much as possible on their plate. Not my sort of place really.

The Fox at Willian is nice actually - owned by a guy who had a couple of pubs in Norfolk and he's brought the concept of fresh local (ish) food with him.

There is a half decent Italian in Letchworth itself - L'Artista. I've not been for a little while but I've always had a good meal in there. It is a little hit and miss for atmosphere though, when it's quiet it's very quiet. But get in on a Saturday night when full and it's nice.

Just remembered another little Italian in Baldock - Il Forno. Always highly recommended by people I know - I've not actually been myself. It is little and rather intimate, rather like being in the owners house - but that is, as most people say, what makes it so nice.

Hitchin has a few places as well,

Bar Meze, Mrs LtD went there not so long ago and really enjoyed it, tapas style but vegetarian hence I've not been!

The Highlander pub has had a revamp a couple of years ago and is really excellent, food is super now.

The Radcliffe Arms has also been re done and has got good reviews but Mrs LtD wasn't that impressed.

There's probably more if I think about it.

Oops - don't know why I thought it was vegetarian then. Must try it!

Yep - Bridge St Bistro is another good one.

See OP - spoilt for choice! Only difference around here is they're not all on the same street like the big city!

The Tilbury in Datchworth is very nice, the Brocket Arms near Ayott St Lawrence is also a nice place to eat.

Got to agree with Redcoats. Although a tad pricey you get what you pay for i found. Theres a greek resturant in Baldock called 'Zues' (if thats how its spelt?) which i've never been too but have heard lots of good things about.

Failing anything local theres always the short distance Stevenage. Theres the old town with prezzo's and pizza express, ASK and a couple of good indians. Or 2minutes up the road from there is the leisure park where you will find another prezzo's and ASK haha!
