Reported onboard fire.

"In its last message, the crew told Shanghai traffic controllers that fire had erupted in the hold.
We suspect some inflammable material caught fire there,"
Deputy Transport Minister Kim Han-Young told journalists.
The plane carried 58 tonnes of cargo,including 0.4 tonnes of potentially risky materials such as lithium batteries,paint amino acid solution and synthetic resin, he said.

A coastguard patrol boat found debris including part of the wing, seats and a liferaft just over 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of the island.

Cargo jets such as the 747 should be able to open doors in the belly and drop the cargo out if it is endangering the aircraft. By that I mean rather than the hold doors actual panels in the belly that open, any dangerous cargo should be placed on those specific spots then if anything happens that will not be able to be resolved in the air (eg a fire) the doors can just be opened allowing the cargo to plummet out of the AC.

Now that would be fun. Loading the AC up with flour bombs and dropping them somewhere you know chavs like to hang out. Imagine the mess a ton or so of flour would make when it hit the ground biggrin But in actual fact I agree with what has been said on Pprune that they should limit or stop the transportation of Li-Ion batteries on aircraft. Although if they kept them in a cooled environment like they do with food items then they would probably be safer.

You would not believe how tightly controlled hazardous cargo is on aeroplanes these days. What caught fire is more likely due to an electrical issue than anything else.

True but in a post above the mere mention of resin gave me a cold shiver, I work in an industry which has had numerous instances of resin self-igniting through oxidation, due to poor quality control (China I'm looking at you). frown

If it's on a plane, you can be sure that it's packed properly - the packing specification is very strict. I put nasty things on planes for a living, and if there was any chance of it being a risk they would not fly it.

Packing can exacerbate this problem. Containers (be it boxes, drums etc) stacked together in an enclosed space and the contents oxidise and self-heat, and an "oven effect" occurs particularly in the inner packages, the product smoulders and then self-ignites. The reason I'm zoning in on the resin, is that when it is made correctly it is perfectly benign, but switch to a cheaper supplier and (seemingly) the same product has impurities which cause exactly the issues I've just described.

This is first hand industrial experience, you may seemingly carry that same resin safely for 20+ years but a few changes in purity of raw materials, manufacturing processes or even you choose to use an inexperienced start-up chemical manufacturer as your choice of supplier and you may have to explain to your insurers why your warehouse burned down, or why a fire brought an aircraft down.
