Light aircraft crashes into houses in Salford

A plane has crashed into two houses in Greater Manchester, police have said.
Officers were called to Newlands Avenue, Peel Green, Salford, at about 12:20 BST following reports a plane had collided with several properties.
When they arrived at the houses, near Barton Aerodrome in Irlam, they discovered a light aircraft had come down and hit two properties.
A North West Air Ambulance spokesman said two people in the plane had been seriously injured.
'Extensive damage'
The spokesman said one of them was a 59-year-old man who had suffered serious burns. It was not clear what injuries the other person, a woman, had sustained.
The homes were unoccupied at the time of the crash, the spokesman said.
Valerie Briggs, a neighbour who called the emergency services, said she heard an explosion and came out to see the light plane crashed into houses across the road.
She said one of the properties sustained extensive damage.
A cordon is in place around the scene. The A57 Liverpool Road is closed after junction 11 of the M60.
Thousands of pounds worth of improvements were made to the properties etc etc

Peel have been trying to close Barton for a few years and now this has happened along with the fact the NIMBYS have started to pipe up may well be the beginning of the end.
This would be a sad thing indeed.
I've been told there's a suspicion that operations at Barton may be moved to the BAE Woodford airfield once the factory has closed so that Peel can develop Barton. The Woodford airfield is meant to be closing soon but there's an idea that this isn't actually the case.This would be a sad thing indeed.

This makes a lot of sense, I was speaking with a former Woodford engineer yesterday and he's advocated this for a while. There are discussions taking place presently about what to do with the site, much of the land is greenbelt whereas the area around Barton is prime for development particularly taking into account Peel's ambitions for the Ship Canal.For those that aren't familiar Barton is a grass 'field by the M60 Motorway and ship canal on the edge of the Greater Manchester conurbation whereas Woodford is a concrete runway surrounded in the main by open land.
