Has anybody got a sailing yacht in the south/south east ?
I want to get a flavour of sailing and am currently struggling to get on any courses, i'm impatient like that.
I've just started the Essential Navigation and Seamanship course and plan to do the 2 day starter course in about 3 weeks time.
Just wondered whether anybody was planning to go out on their boat shortly over the next couple of weeks and could give me a lift to give me a feel for it ?
Happy to supply food/drinks for the trip or whatever is required.

I'm at the Edinburgh Fringe this weekend, not back until early next week. However, I'll be doing some odd jobs on the boat from next Friday 26th, and will likely be there until Tuesday/Wednesday the following week.
I have accounts to prep as well, and given there's no mobile signal, let alone broadband, it's the perfect spot for me to get my a in to g and get it done!
You are, suffice to say, more than welcome to join me on Friday night, or Saturday, Sunday, even better Monday (m'lady is otherwise engaged), or possibly Tuesday/Wednesday too. Happy to take you out on the Solent, over the the isle of Wight or whatever, we can get the sails up, you can put a bit of your navigation theory in to practice, in fact, I'd be happy for you to sail the boat and I'll just watch/advise.
Just three rules, no children, gingers, or Welsh.
Best of all, there's no reason to thank me either, it's an excellent excuse for me to get out on the water for a change.

Yeah, but engine = expense = you were obviously never a student. And what's more land + beer = crash = yet more expense.
Thinking about it, your sort of boating just sounds expensive. :shudder:

Absolutely no problem at all. She's only a little yacht, but that does have the advantage that she's very easy to handle, sail, steer and park, and you can do all of this single handed.Just finished the Bouyage and Charts/Navigation sections of the course - think I need a glass of red

I remember when I did the theory before buying my first yacht, and yearning to go out and put some of what I'd learned in to practice, it would have made it all so much easier to understand. Things like making decisions on the hop (thirty minutes of calculations on tides mean you're now out of date and have to start again, and so on), which you just can't learn in theory.
One thing though, you will definitely be getting involved, steering, navigating, and so on, otherwise there's no point. Don't worry, it's easy!
Mrs Maser says can you do bank holiday Monday? She wants to come down for the weekend, but prefers land-based sailing (read : shopping/coffee/reading/breakfast), but will be off on Sunday night. Monday would mean a decent day out on the water without having to stop for elevensees, lunch, tea....
Drop me a pm and we'll work out the details, I'll give you the yard address, etc. I don't get a 'phone signal at the marina, so we'll need to firm it up beforehand and wear a carnation shaped like a con-rod or something.
Anybody else want to come along?

My mate would have like to have come along (he was going to teach me a bit as hes done sailing/dingy racing,etc) but hes off camping that weekend I think. I may have somebody else but it would only be one more max.

She was the only sensible investment in my twenties, I bought her when she was two years old, so still quite new, and I was about 24. We've got a lot of history, I know her inside out, and love her to bits.
That's not to say we won't be looking for a 39 or 44' Elan over the winter as well though... Nearly bought a 384 last winter but just missed out!

She is certainly a lot nicer than mine She was the only sensible investment in my twenties, I bought her when she was two years old, so still quite new, and I was about 24. We've got a lot of history, I know her inside out, and love her to bits.

Well, a quick update to finalise.
We did indeed make it out on the best day of the weekend, weather good, wind just about perfect.
Caught the tide down to Yarmouth for lunch, then just about caught the tide back up again late afternoon, ended up beating all the way up the Beaulieu river to get home. Not the quickest of returns, but all good practice.
Anyway, nobody went in the drink, we didn't lose the rig, no lifeboats were called, and nothing caught fire. A successful day.

Actually, got a little bit of video, but came out at a silly 45mb, I'll try to edit it down and will post it up if it comes out at a reasonable size.Ended up skype video calling my office in China from half was across the Solent, they didn't know it was a bank holiday over here, so had to explain where I was. Technology.

I'm in Lymington and I'm always up for a sail. Don't often get to sail as I work in the powerboat trade. Let me know if you're out again, my girlfriend and I would love to help crew. We've both sailed on holiday a couple of times, but not much in the UK. We've owned several powerboats though, so know what we're doing at sea.
