I went to Elvington yesterday with Mrs Hooli & enjoyed the afternoon. They've got some good stuff there which we've taken some poor pics of.

Take your Caterham Eric, and do a TD at the same time. Although abrasive, it is one of the few spots where you really can drive your car way beyond its and your limits without fear of collecting some armco.

Anyone know why the Halifax was called Friday the 13th? I always thought bomber crews were a very superstitious bunch. Given this it seems an odd choice of name.

hehe

Oops wink

Nah we didn't do circuits even though we took the bikes to get there.

Eric, The Halifax is built from bits. IIRC part of the fuselage is from a crash site in Yorkshire & the wings came from Catterick? but it's painted as the most famous Halifax that flew from Elvington.

The wings are from a Hastings.

Reverse psychology. The a/c had several 'fate tempting' markings including: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."

Hi G15. You've been missing for a while.

The "Halifaz" is a bit of a "bitsa" but they've done a good job.

I remember seeing the central fuselage section when it was in store at the Skyfame Museum, Staverton in 1976.

I was too lazy to walk across the room to the guide book & see if it had any details.

The Hastings transport derived a lot of its structure from work carried out on teh Halifax so it's not a bad compromise.

As I understand it-

New build forward fuselage, middle portion is from a crash site on the Isle of Lewis, wings are from the Hastings that was on the Catterick fire dump (though there was a pair found still boxed which are sat on a Queen Mary trailer up at Elvington somewhere..). Engines came courtesy of the French, being used on the Nord Noratlas, and the tailplane was built by some of British Aerospace's apprentices.

As impressive as the Halifax is, the Mosquito of Tony Agar's impresses me more given what he started with and the fact that it is being rebuilt to ground run!

Regards,

Rich

I'm amazed at the size and angle of flaps on the Nimrod (much lik a DC10 from memory)

I guess those wings weren't very efficient at low speed then?

If that is the one at the same place I didn't get any decent pics of it, partly because of how close to the back wall of the hanger it's stood but mostly because it's in bits with the engines on a wheelie trolley under a wing & so forth.
