Craney boat type thing off the coast of Whitstable??

Was out with a friend down Whitstable seafront, and this is moored/parked off the shore.

Its a really poor picture but from where we were it looks like a red catamaran/oil rig/transformer type thing



Any ideas? intrigued

It's a jack-up crane barge, so probably involved in wind farm construction or maintenance, but might be something else.

In a couple of weeks you'll have whirling blades all across the horizon.

They are already there, and have been for some time.

We thought it was something to do with the windfarm, but it was considerably closer to shore than any of the turbines? Maybe theyre expanding the field of them closer to shore?

Power export cable is being run from the London Array site( Kentish Knock, 15 mile N of Margate roughly) to the landfall at Cleve Hill, Graveney. Lots going on out there at the moment, surveying, grapple tows, etc.

construction at London Array site, the pile is driven into seabed then the yellow `transition piece` sits on top. the whirry windmill bit that allegedly makes electricity then sits on top of the TP.







Stage one of the project is about 170 turbines and should be finished end of 2012.
all told there will be 300 installed making it the biggest offshore windfarm in the world.

Would these be the same type of wind farms that have to be shut down when the wind gets too strong because the high winds are to dangerous.............

the same ones that are getting billions of UK taxpayers pounds in subsidies to fund construction by companies that pay tax anywhere in the world but here . . .

which, even when operating at maximum output, will only provide not quite one tenth of the power of a medium sized nuclear plant. but hey, if you think thats "saving the planet" be my guest :-)
