Libya's over; they're cleaning down and getting ready for Syria now.

Are there more unstable brown countries we can help install an unknown rebel government in?

If you had said that 10 years ago when i was walking out of 6th form i would have proablly have gone to sign up straight away. However i have grown far to fond of civil life to ever sign up now. Plus things like a house, a 3 and a half year old daughter (that i dont get to see enough as it is) and tyring to establish a carrer all stack up against it right now. lol

I'll give it a look tonight.

I used to have books and books showing verious countries aircraft fully tooled up (think i still have Strike Aces). However these are all a litttle long in the tooth now. Also keep finding out about intresting weapon systems (ie Brimstone and CRV7-PG) but no idea if we are using them or not.

Chris.

"Fox" is an abbreviated form of the radio phonetic for the letter "F" - which should really be Foxtrot.

"Fox 1" means I have fired my first missile. "Fox 2" means I have fired my second - and so on. It helps inform the ground controllers how the engagement is going - especially if the fighter has a choice of weapons i.e missiles or cannons.

I managed it for 10 years with 3 kids, a house, and built a very good career

Logically brilliant and brilliantly logical. Ta!

Although I'm sure the accompanying thought is not so much 'Foxtrot 1' but 'Take that you bd'

My understanding the "Fox (number)" call is related to the class of weapon employed, rather than anything to do with inventory.

I can't link to the reference document (APP-07) detailing current NATO terminology at http://nsa.nato.int/nsa since it requires registration, but there is a draft copy here:

http://seb.brc.free.fr/ressources/APP7BMPP7B%20Rat...

To wit:

FOX (NUMBER) Simulated/actual launch of air to air weapons.

ONE Air to air weapons.
TWO Infrared - guided missile.
THREE Active radar-guided missile.

I think colloquially "Fox Four" either referred to guns or a mid-air collision. I've also seen the definition of 'ONE' being a generic radar guided missile, and "THREE" referring to AMRAAM or Phoenix. "TWO" invariably refers to an IR seeker though.

It's always more complicated.

I've got video of a mid air collision between two USAF fighters during combat air training and the pilot of the aircraft which captured the collision on his in-cockpit camera just yells "Midair, Midair, Midair".

If they had that to remember in the BoB I doubt they'd have downed many Jerries. 'He's in my sights - I'm about to fire... now what code was it for 8x 303s? Porcupine 23? Bedwetter 16? Damn, I can't remember. Hang on, I'll get the book out, I know it's under the dashboard. Grunt... hang on, no that's a sandwich, I think it's back here behind the - oh bugger I've been shot down. What's the code for 'wounded in shoulder and thigh, about to bail out?'"

Eharding is nearly 100% correct but...

Fox 1 - semi active radar missile
Fox 3 - active radar missile

So obviously the Sidewinder would be a Fox 2 (yes there are some radar guided versions), but what would an AMRAAM be? its initial a Fox 1 (?) but then a Fox 2 as its uses IR for the last bit....
