Just picked up my new boat!

Woo! I'm grinning like an idiot. Went down south (Norwich-Torbay via Doncaster) to pick my spangly new 1984 Sealine 22 sports up this weekend.
Got a few small jobs to do and a new canopy to buy but I'm made up. Waiting for her to be delivered on Monday.

A bit naughty lifting it without spreader bars! 
A good way to squish the hull. Fortunately you seem to have got away with it, that's the nice thing about older boats, they're built a bit more substantial than the new ones.

More importantly the slings are trying to pull together along the length of the boat and if you do that with a fresh slimy bottom out of the river don't be surprised when your pride and joy lands arse or nose first. Lifting cradle or proper hoist for me.
Anyway nice boat Crofty hope she gives you loads of fun.
Cheers chaps. It'll be a slipway launch tonight (delivery was postponed) so no lifting issues. Don't know what the weather's like near you but it's windy and miserable here. The perfect weather to try and get an unfamiliar boat onto my little mooring! I've roped in a couple of mates to help. No pun intended.

I think the 'psychology of toys' is the same whether you cruise on pretty rivers running through pastoral scenes of yesteryear, with attractive pubs and cheery onlookers, or grey lumpy tidal stuff 1000 feet deep stinking of salt, rotting seaweed and supertankers!

Bad netiquette to bump one's own post but here's an update:
Boat arrived 7am on Friday (it was blowing a gale on Tuesday)
Got her in the water. Clicked into reverse, went backwards about a foot, then forwards. WTF? Forward is now reverse too??
Start her up, engine runs. OK, not great but it'll do.
At my marina the slipway goes into the river, then you go to the entrance of the moorings about 50m away.
Back into the river. Change into forwards (which is now reverse at the helm). Engine dies. Float back into the nearest mooring, luckily the wind was blowing the right way!
Went back later with a mate, checked the engine over changed the plugs which were sooty as fook. Reckon the choke's playing up, so I might just hold it open for now.
Also the outdrive kicks up in reverse, I've skinned my knuckles/palm/back/arse (don't ask).

Good update. I'm only a year into boat ownership but I can tell you that you learn a lot in that year!
One thing that surprised me was that unlike cars, where you take it to a garage and pay a man to fix it, boat owners prefer to grovel about in oil and filth with spanners.
NB: Did you not take it for a test before you bought it?

Knowing how those drives work I would have said that is nigh on impossible. The cable is just operating a cam in the drive to send the dog gears up or down to achieve direction so the only thing I can think of is the control box has fallen apart inside?
As for the not locking down in gear firstly make sure the lifter has retracted all the way as it disengages the lock mechanism as it lifts. If that's the case then possibly the rod that disengages it has got bent and stuck or the operating pin has fallen off the gear swivel or the whole mechanism has fallen apart which isn't as unlikely as it sounds. The drive only locks down when in neutral or reverse and is released in forward gear to allow it kick up if you hit something. Either way it will be boat out to sort it I'm afraid.
I'm guessing at a 270 or 280 drive and if you need secondhand parts try Coastal Rides in Dover as they always seem to have plenty but check Volspec first for new prices as they sometimes charge new prices for secondhand bits.
