How well do you think it has treated and what do you feel are the most authentic movies that depict aviation and flying?
For starters, I would suggest "The Right Stuff" as a movie that really reflected the spirit of research flying.

See "Cloud Dancer", with David Carradine.
Vintage 1970's US cheese plot, but some stunning aerobatic Pitts footage, and the epic maneuvering kill on a P51 by a Turbo Lance with oil pouring out of it always makes me smile (not that most Turbo Lances needed gunfire from a P51 to persuade the engine to blow up).
One Six Right, about Van Nuys, CA and the decline of GA in America. Great movie with no purpose other than showing off some great flying. In fact, I may just watch it again tonight.
Also, if you can look past the plot and shoddy acting, Air America has some great flying in it, and Flight of the Intruder is worth it just for the Skyraiders.
If you want something a little higher and faster - For All Mankind is definately worth a watch.

Not really what the thread's about but there's a Nevil Shute book set in the Pacific (I think?!) with a guy who runs a cargo plane company or something...always thought that would've been a good film.

Point of order. The F35 only has one engine, and I suspect that at the top of a zoom-climb well above service altitude a compressor-stall - along with all manner of farting, banging and wrong-end fire belching might well be on the menu.No....it was the recovery that should have had you throwing things at the TV.

Agree that is one of the better ones I have seen. Top Gun in French! The Alpha jet stuff in it is good too. From a French film but some good stuff on there.

My favourites are non commercial ones made and put on the internet. The undercarriage of the Freighter jumbo and the Mirage F1s flying around Chad.

Tora Tora Tora is much, much better as it is far more accurate.
The opening and the last scene just before the credits of Top Gun are excellent. The opening for the F-8's and F-14's taxiing about on the flight deck and taking off. The closing scene for the pair of F-14's in a full burner take off.
It's been many years since I last saw it but "Strategic Air Command" with Jimmy Stuart was pretty good as well.

Another heavy metal USAF film from a few years later is "Gathering of Eagles" which has some great B-52 action, including this take-off sequence.

You get the impression that the actors weren't quite ready for the noise and smoke.
