I have been helping out a an elderly relative clear their loft and inside a very old book on HMS Victory we found a folded letter which looks to be sent from HMS Victory in late 1803 by Nelson as it bears his signature.
Is there any PH experts in this subject on here that i could send over a copy that would be interested to take a look?

Its signed Nelson & Bronte. I also have no real knowledge on this...
I will give it a scan when i get into work. I can make out half of it and its a letter to someone thanking them for their letter then they refer to a Mr Elliot requesting he bring the Neapolitan troops somewhere and then comments on how he found the wind to be fair .. or something along those lines. I just cant read his writing

I wouldn't scan it, nor take a picture with a flash. Try not to handle it too much and find an expert via the internet. The letter is over 200 years old so it will be abit fragile, that's why you've got to be carefull with it. Also don't take it into work with you, leave it at home somewhere safe. When you get the chsnce to take several pictures in good light without using the flash, then put the letter somewhere safe and don't touch it until you've been in contact with an expert. Also don't mention the letter to other people as the letter could be worth a few grand.

Unfortunately they have already taken a photocopy so I have told them to put the original away somewhere dark.
The letter was inside a book on The HMS Victory written by 'The Old Sailor' whcih i can see reprints online but not an original.
i think i will mail the copy to an auction house to see what they think.
It would be nice if it was worth something that would help my elderly relatives in their last years but if nothing else, im quite enjoying the research

I fear a photocopy will not allow them to determine whether it is genuine or fake. When things are valuable, forgeries exist!

Another Nelson and Bronte letter hey? Mate, they are everywhere.Didn't even end up a good story, he died. Besides, you probably can't read much of it being as Mr Nelson had rubbish hand writing. Anyway, as a favour, you know, it's coming up to Christmas and every penny counts? £30 notes, cash. You will thank me! I will give it a scan when i get into work. Haha .. My that does sound like a great deal .. You seem like a very trustworthy sort and thats quite some offer. Actually im a little confused as according to an article in 1964, this letter is supposedly residing in the Australian Maritime museum. Unless he wrote two!

He used the name Nelson Bronte when signing letters as it related to his title Duke of Bronte. If it's a real one.See ---> http://www.bronteinsieme.it/BrIns_en/2st_en/nelson...
