listening to a guy last night at a boat club meet,
he is up shid creek,
he has bought an ex life boat
not sure if it is an ex lifeboat(RNLI)
or an ex life boat from a ship(with cabin added) - not seen yet
with it being condemned/decommissioned
none of the insurance companies he has tried will touch it

oops

Has he had it surveyed, and if so what did it say?

Do offshore vessels have to have insurance? In Ditchland (EA) it was optional until last year.

Insurance peeps are not interested in survey, condemn notice trumps survey,

have to have insurance to keep it the boat club and use on river(local byel aws)

If what you say is true then it seems he has bought a large pile of interestingly-shaped firewood frown

On the bright side, it should last a few winters.

Anyone else have a view?

So what is the warning then?

Don't buy a boat you know nothing about, from a dubious source that has told you it is already condemned?

Talk about being vague....

Maybe you could get some actual facts and post again?

With KH here the OP is a bit vague / confusing.

But to add a couple of points.

No need for insurance by statute but some bylaws may require it.

Insurers generally will expect a max three year old survey on vessels over 20 years old. Check your policy as they have a tendency to just renew without reminding!

Not sure where the terminology condemned has come from. There is no authority to my knowledge that has that criteria for a private vessel.

Shid Creek is not too much of a problem as long as you own a puddle. biggrin

I call BS; it's a boat, not an aeroplane. If a surveyor can inspect it and declare it sound it can be insured. There are loads of surplus lifeboats in use, presumably some of them are insured. In any case, even if they won't cover hull risks there's no reason for an underwriter to refuse to cover 3rd party risks.
