Yamaha outboard 3cyl two stroke?

Hi all,

I live in southern Italy and have just purchased a 5 meter pleasure boat with a Yamaha
3cly two stroke Autolube engine,

Both the boat and engine need a fair bit of attention, but they were cheap so that suits me fine.....

When I first looked at the engine it had a 40 on the engine cover, but when I picked the boat and engine up after it was dumped on a second hand trailer the top spark plug was broken as was the starter bracket and top coil, the engine cover had been changed it now had a "25" on it......so they must have damaged the cover and stuck anything on to keep me happy......

They have since replaced all the broken parts and ran the engine up for me so all is in working order it pumps water and selects both forward and reverse gears, but just how much I can trust it is another mater!!!

My problem is the identification plate is missing from the engine, I've looked on ebay and Google images and the plate should be riveted on the transom bracket but on mine there is only a couple of rivets,

I need to identify this engine not only to get a workshop manual but I want to purchase a good seconf hand engine in the UK the same as this one, and then use this one as a dodor if needed, I have posted some photos if it helps.....

Before you all scream stolen engine, I have a receipt witnesses and plenty of photos of this boat being purchased so I can only assume it perhaps may have been stolen at some point in it’s life but was recovered and then found it’s way to this boat yard and on to me........

I'm from BHG Marine.

There should be a part number stamped on the cylinder head. If it starts with 6H4 it's a 40hp, if it starts with 6H5 it's a 50hp. I doubt it will be anything else, certainly nothing smaller. The 6H4 number will be the model number.

It will be 1987 to 1992. Give us a call on 01590 613603 and speak to Terry if you need any parts. He's our Yamaha parts man. He's usually pretty busy but he'll get back to you with what you need. He will need to know the model number to identify parts and things first.

Hi and thanks for the reply The numbers on the cyl head are exactly what you predicted so it is a 40hp and as you stated somewhere between a 1987 and 1992..... well at least I can now order a workshop manual!! I'll be in Southsea in January so if there's any parts needed I'll pop in.

No problem glad to help.

Our service centre (0590 616479) also has a lot of old salvage engines, so they sometimes have good second hand parts too.
