Stuff like that genuinely scares me! And I've always wondered how they withstands abuse like that, to me it's like sitting on a bar stool... very top heavy and therefore doesn't take much to be pushed over. I couldn't do it, fair play to those who do. A mate is a scaffolder on the rigs, some of the stories he comes back with... fook that!
Same storm, 20m wave hitting drill ship. Watch from 3.10... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfNhHQDMCXI
Yikes!
Yikes!
I was onboard when this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfNhHQDMCXI happened (skip to 3:10) a couple of weeks ago - the helideck just out of shot on the top right is 34m up...
Apparently the rig got hit by a 31m wave that day - the heave made going up and down stairs interesting - going from weighing 35ish kg to 105ish kg
Sleeping was nigh on impossible - if the movement trying to chuck you out of bed didn't wake you up, then the thrusters rattling your filling out would.

Wow, can those rigs withstand a direct wave hit at the height of the superstructure?
many moons ago about the offshore life.
