Loud Aircraft Over East Cambs

Morning.

Can any one tell me what the very loud aircraft that has been flying over East Cambridgeshire for the last few evenings is? It seems to circle for about half an hour between 6 and 7.

And it's bloody loud.

I assume you are talking about a jet? (I heard the USAF Hercs doing circuits and bumps into Mildenhall the other night)

In which case the choice is now limited to Eagle, Tornado or Typhoon.

My guess is Typhoon doing Olympic work-up as they are a bit shoutier than the other two

I heard that last night, sounded like a very low bass, almost like an explosion. Dark though so couldn't see a thing, this was in St Neots, Cambs.

You may be getting some very unusual noise within the next 12 months or so. They are expecting to bring 10 Ospreys over to be based at Mildenhall.

That's what they'd have you believe. I watched one fly high over Northants one summer's day flanked by two F-15s. It was the loudest rumble of noise I've ever heard from 3 aircraft. The noise arrived long before the planes did and carried on long after they had gone.

F15s do have a very distinctive deep noise that lasts ages - maybe they are doing some night training in Wales as I went through a stage of seeing them on the returns a few years ago. They always seem to be in 2s or 4s and have a very obvious tail light configuration with 1 static and 1 stobe...if you get a chance to spot them!

Well having seen B-2's by themselves doing air displays and also watching them coming in and out of Whiteman AFB, I can confirm that they are definitely very quiet.

F-15's are deafening in comparison, even at low speeds and easily drown out the sound of a B-2.

I had the good fortune of watching a B-2 fly up the Hudson river in New York, as part of their 4th of July celebrations - and they are eerily quiet. F-15's however, are quite easily probably the loudest fighter I've had the pleasure of hearing. During the G8 summit held at Gleneagles, the USAF brought a few in and flew them rather rather low and rather fast around the Central Belt, and by christ were they loud in comparison to the GR4's and Jaguars.

You heard the F-15 Engines. I have seen the same formation (standard practice most of the time I believe), and I've seen both types on their own. F-15's are noisy buggers! The B2 makes very little noise.

Oh, and for the OP.

Are there any old school 707/c135 variants or DC8 freight aircraft operting out of Mildenhall at the moment? That would do it. The old engines are very noisy.

I would say a Typhoon is really harsh and the F15 boomy - both about the same level of ear-bleeding close up!

I've heard and seen Typhoons, Tornados, F16s, Migs, SAABs....and the most impressive sounding was the Typhoon, in my opinion. In a really loud, ear-bleeding, rip-the-air-apart kinda way.

Haven't heard an F15, so was thinking bloody hell, if it's louder than the Typhoon!

I'd LOVE to have seen a Blackbird though, bet that thing makes the rest sound like damp squibs!

Two years ago at Cosford airshow was the first time i had seen a Typhoon display.

Proper eardrum destroying sound. Louder than anything i had heard before. ( Tornado F3/GR4 , Vulcan , Jaguar , etc... ).
