Everything flexes until it breaks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE_ri8PkihE

On a serious not, I was under the impression these ships were built, and sailed, in compartments. Each 'block' of the compartment rising and falling independently.
I have no idea why

Wow, I am amazed how much movement the ship can cope with. I would have thought a couple of weeks exposure to such flexing would have fatigued the metal out of use. Dread to think how much punishment the structure goes through over the vessel's service life.Codswallop said:

Dread to think how much punishment the structure goes through over the vessel's service life.Other metals like aluminium don't have a limit below which fatigue can be avoided in the same way, and any cyclic loads can contribute to fatigue failure. That is why such care is taken with aircraft, and why they are assigned a working life beyond which it is deemed the risk of failure is too high to continue using them.
When I was a young'un I worked on a pair of trawlers out of Peterheeeeeed... Got caught in a Spring storm and at one point we thought we were going down as the boat was overloaded with fish and had the sailing ability of a block of lead. But this video is something else...
Agree with the poster above - film rarely captures how bad reality is...

Interestingly I just met with the QM2's director of entertainment whilst flying back to Blighty from Sydney. He was telling us
some really interesting facts about the vessel. 28' to a gallon
She's 40% heavier than similar sized non Atlantic ships, thus designed to withstand
the beating! If you google QM2 Entertainment Director, he has produced a couple of really interesting videos about the ships recent re-fit.
As you would expect, a really nice guy!
