Hi All,

To keep up my V8 obsession, I'm looking at one of these -

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/motor...

Either the boat in question (a friend back in NZ will handle all for me) or I'll import one from the States.

The question is, does anyone know where (apart from the sea, lol) I could get away with using such a beast on rivers and lakes in the UK? I have n idea about the rules and regs...although on canals I know 4mph is the top speed...oh dear!

Cheers, and roll on summer smile

NIMBYs and watermelons have had funpolice-style speed limits put on most of the large lakes/lochs, so you've pretty much had it unless you go on the sea.

Bugger. I was hoping lochs may be OK...especially considering the 80mph plus ability, lol.

What about the bristol channel up to Chepstow? Hmmm, may investigate smile

Cheers,

C.

Not sure about Loch Ness, but Loch Lomond and the major Cumbrian Lakes have limits.

I seem to remember from an old Top Gear where they race across London, Clarkson has a speed boat which has to creep along until he passes Wandsworth Bridge, at which point there are no speed limits on the Thames...

No limit on the Severn AFAIK - been up there at 30+ knots on a RIB at university.

Generally speaking any tidal estuary has no limit. Just be sure to check when it stops being tidal and becomes a river. Most rivers are a 6 knot speed limit.

We run the hover on the Severn with no prob. Bristol to Chepstow I would think has a speed limit but would have to check.

From Teddington to Wandsworth there is an 8 knot limit. There is an advisory 12 knot speed limit from Wandsworth bridge to just after Tower bridge which it's probably a good idea to follow as there is a lot of traffic there and much of the time it would be unsafe to try and go through faster than that.
