Well actually Eric, I thought you, more so than most would have known that the railways pay very good compensation for properties which stand in the way of railways or roads.
In so much, that the Chinese are rather wishing that any new train tracks run through their garden, so they can get a good pay out.

Oh well, live and learn.

The UK railways, as with other things, suffers from being first. We are still using the rail routes that were laid down in the 19th century. They weren't bombed out of existence during WW2, so we are stuck with their legacy and all the problems that brings. Other countries either don't have an existing infrastructure, or have sufficient space that they can just build new with the latest technology.

In particular, look at how 'sharp' the rear end looks against the track it's sitting on.

They don't pay "very good" compensation, they pay what they think the market rate is. NOBODY wants a train line to go through their property - if they wanted to sell at market rate then they could, and not have the hassle of a compulsory purchase on a bit of their land.

I am in favour of HS2, but (like you) it doesn't go through my garden.

It occurs rarely but, I am with Sam68 here.

That looks badly shopped to me, the very rusty rail it is "sitting on" shows no sign of a big heavy train darkening its sleepers with shadows/ or any evidence that any kind of vehicle has travelled along it recently.

The front end looks wrong, no reality in sight here.

Lots of perspective but no distance fading either as Sam says...

Impressive speeds for a train though, just don't run it through my area either. It's slipstream might drag next door's cat onto the tracks.
