What you need to know for boating on the Thames....

Afternoon all.
After a pleasant mid afternoon cruise in a little rented motor boat from Henley on Thames I'm tempted to buy a little 4 seater "power boat" for £1500 or so.
Are there any thing I'd need to know interms of :
Insurance
Licensing
Codes of practice
or where to look for such info'.
It would be trailered to and from the River..... The reason I ask all this as I always thought it was highly legislated in terms of motor boats on the Thames but all we had to do was give them my address/details and hand over £28..... No need for previous excperience etc.
Any info would be excellent.

Insurance is cheap. Prob around £150/year I go with GJW Direct who have always been good. You may not need it but always sensible to have cover. Unsure on the other points.
Get something powerful enough to ski / wakeboard behind and you will have much more fun. Also make sure your going to be able to tow it without being over weight limits unless you have done your trailer test.

You don't need any qualifications to take a boat on the river, but just take it easy to start with and watch wind and current.

Why limit yourself to one river? The boat is on a trailer. Might as well get something you can have some fun with as well as being capable of trolling up and down the Thames. Plenty of lakes etc to enjoy without limits all over the country.
Can appreciate your thoughts, the boat would be a speed boat of sorts so not restricted to just the Thames. So lakes etc would also be on the cards, however we also have a Stand up Jet-Ski so wouldn't be used on lakes very much. My thoughts are to keep it at a friends lock up ready for nice days ....not fussed about it sitting there aslong as it doesn't de grade the condition.

(£300 new from Decathlon, plus a pump, a couple of collapsible paddles and a couple of bouyancy aids, and you're about £400 all in. We had a lovely time bumbling along, and just lifted the boat out when we wanted a picnic. It weighs about 15kg with all the bits dry, a little more on the way home. It's now drying out in the back garden.)
hmm we have done similar for the last couple of years , hiring a day cruiser from the Trout Inn at Lechlade.
We're also thinking about buying our own --- but the big question is how the devil do you moor the thing ?
We trundle along, seeing all sorts of sizes of boat tied up on the river banks having picnics etc - we try and crunch scrape we're grounded. No matter how deep the river looks !! We've even managed to ground it in places where we know other boats moor !

Also - if you're local, check out St. Patricks Stream and Henerton Backwater - both more interesting than staying on the Thames and in easy reach from Henley.

Great tips, thanks, we will. We're not that local to Henley, but I lived there for two years, so love an excuse to go back. We're only a little over an hour away, any way.Cheers.

Kids love the stream - it drops 5ft as it goes round shiplake lock....flows nice so no need to paddle, just chil and watch the kingfishers!
