matt, why are the heavier? There was a car in the US that had a mErlin (well the alison) weengine fitted inc the supercharger i think.

To be honeest the price seems pretty cheap for the power they devleop. Bet there will be some track pulling teams or Ultimate air race teams that are going to get these beasts.

We had a thread about Merlin engined cars a while ago, I think we tallied up about 6 or so.

I recall the Meteor has a deal more steel castings than ali in the Merlin.

Not being destined for a lightweight performance aircraft, it was much cheaper to make the meteors out of steel instead of ally

Yes - thats why later Spitfires had a longer nose with the power bulges to clear the banks of the engine.

Someone I know just suggested making them into coffee tables. After I'd finished shouting at him about the sheer sacrilege, I them enlightening him on how the size of a Griffon would lend itself more to a dining table instead

I was offered a complete Meteor engine for £700 about a week before we moved overseas, two years ago. If I'd had some way to ship it with us it would now be sitting in my workshop awaiting a project to be slipped into.
