Watching James Bond this pm, it occurred to me to wonder whether there have been any verified examples of helicopter vs. helicopter combat.

The only reference I could find via Google was this forum discussion:

http://www.ospreypublishing.com/forum/aviation/108...

Iran/Iraq War seems to be the only example and even then may have been armed vs unarmed helicopters.

Can anyone think of other examples?

It doesn't matter what helicopter the enemy uses. Ultimate victory would always go to Little Nelly...

Except Little Nellie isn't a helicopter,

Air to air just doesn't really work in the rotary world since most dogfights are all about a turning towards the threat quicker than it can turn towards you, which isn't that hard for a helicopter, unless the threat is another helicopter in which case it becomes a sort of Mexican stand off.

If I recall correctly, a F-15E Strike Eagle took out a flying Iraqi helicopter in Gulf War 1....with a Paveway smart bomb!

Factoid: far from unstoppable, Airwolf crashed killing everyone on board. I think.

Yup. It was turned into an air ambulance in Austria after filming.

Yeah, they found it's only weakness - a colt .45 round to the air intake. You would have thought that after the demise of the death star, they'd cover it with plywood or something. Maybe they were waiting for estimates...

I've heard that the idea is to think of a helicopter not as a fighting aircraft (which it's obviously going to be rubbish at) but as an extremely mobile SAM battery. In other words, make use of cover.

There is a version of the Stinger designed for air-to-air use from helicopters.

Not heard that one before. I did read that an A-10 shot down a helicopter with its gun though!
