Number of people in the air... Worldwide?

On a flight last week I was trying to work out how many people are in the air at any one time. It must be a huge number but what time of the day would produce the largest number? Midday in Paris, Chicago, Delhi or Shanghai would I think be the highest.

an interesting but irrelevant fact i learnt the other day, the equivilent of the worlds population is carried in an elevator every 72 hours...

To make things easier I would say they would need to be in the air for at least a minute.

That's astonishing when you consider how many people must never have even seen one let alone been in one within the last 72 hours!

Apparently there are half a million people flying at any one time. Can't remember where I read that though.
