Reading the threads about the copy of the Titanic to be built reminded me that a French colleague had sent me info on the new France to be built. Quite an interesting looking design, whilst still retaining the look of the original.

The old boat used to come into St.Thomas, Virgin Islands when I worked there. She was very gracefull but a bit tatty. I like to think something like the new one will change the design of modern cruiseships. The ones today are dreadful, dull towerblocks on their side.

I think it looks a lot like the yacht 'A' designed by Phillipe Stark.

That new version is quite possibly the ugliest moveable object I have ever seen.

Indeed. Makes me thing of an old submarine running surfaced, except with 2 conning towers.

It won't need any. Anything that ugly will sink before it's launched.

That is not a patch on the original. I wish ships still looked like ships. Even many cargo vessels used to have an elegance about them.

Modern ships are all depressingly utilitarian, and cruise ships are the worst. Slab sided floating hotels, with one or two design features added as an afterthought so you can tell which end is the back.

I agree, this is the Cap San Diego, now moored in Hamburg as a museum ship. I've visited it and it's got a real '60's feel to it, not only on the outside, but how the cabins and bridge look inside too. It's stil seaworthy as well, which is good:

"...in 2003 it was declared a protected item of cultural heritage by German law".

Incredibly impractical for modern life unfortunately. If we had transatlantic liners rather than cruise ships, where people aren't so bothered about a cabin with a window, ships would look much less crap.

In the same way that a car can be under or over-tyred this boat looks over-funnelled.

That truly is a floating abomination, hopefully we can ban it from docking in the UK on health and safety grounds for the damage it could do to human eyes.

The difference between classic liners and modern cruise ships is ticket price - travel not for the rich but for the masses. It's the same as a Pan Am Clipper vs an A380 - volume and low price, so you pack them in and don't worry too much about the looks.

I did see it as SS Norway as it was in the (KGV) Drydock in Southampton for a refit, so visible bow on to the main road to the west of the town. The wings on the funnels were very distinctive.

Yes it was the Norway in the mid-80s. If you read the Wiki link you'll see why she was a bit of a hot potato on scrapping and beyond refit.

Lovely.

As opposed to that modern take on it, which has all the elegance of a rectal polyp.
